Kids attending St Leo the Great school are at risk of injury if we cannot stop people running red lights and not caring that there is a cross walk and school zone. I recently found out that the cameras above the traffic lights are not red light cameras and these people are getting away with so many traffic violations daily.
I have taken it upon myself to volunteer to help with the cross walk and have almost been hit several times this week. This is really scary for me because my baby girl goes to school at St Leos and has to cross for mass with all the other kids.
There are elderly that have a hard time crossing that I worry about, kids under the age of 3, pregnant women, mothers, fathers animals, and yet people continue to speed and run red lights while we are crossing. Does anyone have any suggestions on how we can help this comunity? I thank all of you for your time and efforts. Have a great day.

You might call the SAPD substation that serves that area. It would probably be the South substation. The number there is 207-8191. Explain the problem to them and ask if a patrol officer can monitor the traffic at that intersection during school hours. School officials might also be able to help in contacting the right people to set up some traffic monitoring.

You are correct that the cameras you see mounted above many of the traffic lights in the City of San Antonio are NOT red light cameras. They are used to time traffic light cycles by electronically monitoring traffic flow at an intersection. They take the place of the ground loop wires that used to be buried under the pavement. Also, be sure to push the crosswalk button, if there is one, whenever you want to cross a street. That is supposed to override the traffic-counter cameras, and allow pedestrians sufficient time to cross the street.

blueprey21- It is extremely sad that it sometimes takes an injury or fatality for something to get done. I would encourage the Parents, Residents, and School Officials to contact SAPD and the Council Person to stress the importance of the situation. Please continue to do so until you see action and continued action. Continue to call daily if you have too. I know SAPD cannot be in all places all the time but word of strict enforcement will spread pretty quick throughout the neighborhood.

I drive throughout San Antonio daily and as you know very few people abide by school zone speed limits.

Maybe get the PTA involved to get more adults out in the street in the morning and afternoon. I think the SAPD hires crosswalk guards to monitor the intersections. Maybe the school officials can get monitors out in place. The monitors will generaly be IN the street and not allow kids to cross until they are sure traffic is paying attention.

I grew up in this area and pass the street most days of my life. I don't recall if it has the solar powered flashers and 20MPH speed limit warning on each side. This is a heavy traffic street ..always has been. St. Leo's has been there forever and maybe they should invest in a bridge type crosswalk. Tunneling is most likely out of the question. Too many utilities under the road.
..BTW, this street was named for Octavia Battersby I believe I read. Probably kin to those who did plaster work in Majestic Theater. Had an old friend on that street and frequented Stein's drugstore in the 50's. Long gone now. South Flores is a main feed to downtown and has many school zones. People trying to get to work get antsy trying to crawl through them all.

As wellguy said, start talking to your councilperson's office (I think this is Ramos' district, but I'm not sure). Be polite, earnest, and vigilant and they ought to be able to help improve traffic/safety problems.
