I'm moving to a rental condo downtown this weekend. I'll be new to Texas so I don't know who all of the utility providers are, but I came across CPS First Connections.

The page says:

Quote:
In just a few minutes, you can connect lights, natural gas, phone, cable or satellite television, Internet service, and security systems – almost any service or convenience you need for your new home – at no charge to you! First Connections can even help you change your mailing address.
So whether you're moving into your first home or transferring service from one place to another – keep it simple and avoid the hassle. One call can connect them all.
Do any of you have experience with this? Pros? Cons? I don't know whether it's best to let them handle it or to make individual arrangements myself.

My priorities are electric, water and Internet. We're used to having cable, but that can wait, though we'll probably ultimately want HD on 2 or 3 TVs and a single DVR (TVs probably won't arrive until 2 weeks after I do). and haven't had a land line in 6 years so phone service isn't needed.

There was a string about this a while back - don't recall all the details, but the bottom line was that it simplified being able to get things set up as a "one-stop-shop", but you didn't necessarily get the best deal. The electricity and water I'd likely do through there. The net/tv I'd do in person, just to be sure that you get exactly what you want, and can "work" them for "deals".

I don't know anything about First Connections. But I just wanted to mention one thing about people moving. If you're concerned about your info being sold, ask all the companies involved about their policies on that. You can request that your info not be shared or sold, if that's important to you.

TexasRedneck, on your advice I'm going to setup the electricity and the water through First Connections. I'll handle the Internet and TV separately since getting a better deal is more important to me than saving some time getting it all setup.

Lee, thanks for the tip. I get enough junk mail so I think I'll do that.
