You will feel like you died and went to heaven in SA!

Cokes are about the same (individual from machine)

You can get a 6 pack of beer for what you pay for a pint (almost)

package your broadband with your TV/Phone and it is about what you pay but WAY faster

you can get a 3/4 bedroom, 2 bath house with a nice yard for the same as a flat 1bdrm apt of 190K! In fact, you could get a really nice house for much less actually.

I think you will find the food, produce, dining out, etc to be MUCH cheaper than the UK....and gas here is less than $3 per gallon, so that is a HUGE price difference.

Additional cost would probably be, you drive more, and need a car unlke most of the UK where public transportation is so nice.

Also, you will spend next to nothing for heating costs in the winter....but will probably offset that with the Air Conditioning requirements most summers (this summer has been WONDERFUL so far)!!!
Hope this helps.

I agree with the last poster - SA is very affordable compared to what you describe in the UK. You will definitely need a car and spend more on gas. The neighborhoods don't really have mom and pop shops, grocers, etc. within walking distance so you'll need to drive - a lot! However, the homes in your price range will seem palatial compared to what you're used to in the UK. The heat may be a bit of a shocker but you'll survive with air conditioning. Are you coming here as a student or to work? Are you single or are you moving with a family? These answers will all have some bearing on where you might choose to live in the city.

Good luck with the move. We've only been here for less than two months but really enjoy it here ( and we've lived LOTS of places...)

Fair warning, we're allowed to carry guns here. I know there are some Brit's that really don't groove on that. Good news is we don't use them all that often!

Oh and according to my BIL in England - our bread and cookies are just wrong! He can't find good bread in the states and doesn't like our "soft style" cookies - to him that means they are stale!

But yes - you should be very happy about the cost of living, as long as the job you are taking pays a wage that can sustain it.

guns - lol

That is going to be a bit of an eye opener because apart from armed police in our airports i have never seen a gun before. Personally i think carrying around something that has the power to end anothers life is best left in the hands of trained professionals not just any old joe in the street.

About the bread ! I work with a guy that used to live in NY and he told me the same thing, can't get a decent cup of tea either he reckons.

There are plenty of great pints of beer to be found! The Lion & The Rose is a populer "British Style" pub. http://www.thelionandrose.com/

Maybe it'll be a place to go if you get a little homesick. :-)

Whole Foods Market specializes in organic produce and meats. They are a little pricey....I shop for fresh deli and a few specialty things there. Central Market has a bit more "international" choices....lots of imported foods and a great deli, wine and cheese section. The produce there is wonderful! Both markets have a "build your own six-pak" of beer for about $7.99. You can mix and match and taste test a huge variety of beer and ale.

RE: your flat....that would be a "condo" here. New construction would cost more per square foot, and not too many 1 br condo's are available in new developments. The few in my area are overly priced in my opinion and NOT worth it. If you want a flat/condo....there are quite a few older apartment complexes (formerly rental properties) that have been converted to "condo units" (you purchase the building but the land it's on is common ownership). Those properties generally have an additional fee that is on top of your monthly payment. It's called a HOA or Home Owner's Agreement. It covers costs of maintaining the common areas. If you chose to go this way, be on the look out for this! A realtor may initially tell you what your monthly mortgage payment is......but the HOA fee can vary a great deal.....anywhere from $200 to $800 a MONTH! A realtor worth their salt will explain about HOA's up front before you start looking. If they don't, ask them! I eliminated a lot of very affordable properties because the HOA was outrageous.

You might do better with a small house. There are some "garden" homes (smaller with very little garden to upkeep)....or even a duplex or quad. (two or four residences that are attached.) Renting or leasing runs about $1 per square foot.....so a 1bedroom/1bath that is about 600 square feet will run about $600. Most require a deposit equal to one months rent.

If you chose to rent.....come back and ask about that! There are things that you need to know about renting/leasing.

When you look for a place, keep in mind trees and sun exposure. Try to avoid Southwest or Western exposure. Full sun on unprotected windows will cause a great deal of heat gain inside in the summer....and a much larger air conditioning bill!

If you just use a cell phone, there are many cell phone choices and plans, and that depends on your needs. Some people are now doing away with home phones and just using their cell. If you decide to have a home phone, you can combine your home phone (including unlimited long distance in the US) cable TV and DSL highspeed internet service as a package. Average is about $130-$150 a month for all three, but that also depend on your needs.

Gas/petrol.....around town...average use for a car that gets reasonable gas mileage....maybe $35-$50 a month....again, depending on use. I'm out and about a lot and all over town. It takes about $45 to fill up and I have a 4door sedan....decent gas mileage. I fill up every 3-4 weeks.

So much for a cost of living primer in San Antonio! Best of luck to you!
