Default Moving from NC to San Antonio in a month -- questions

Hi, all. My family and I are relocating (DH got a job in SA, starts Oct 18th), and I was hoping to get some input on the areas we might want to look into for housing.

We have 3 small children (oldest is 5) and would love a neighborhood with a real community feeling, which ours does not have right now -- preferably with other young families, small children, etc.

We'll be looking on the NE side of San Antonio.

Places to look into? Places to avoid? School district recommendations?

I have never set foot in TX (and have only ever lived in NC), and I'm looking forward to this new adventure. I know I'll feel less nervous about it all if I can nail down living arrangements ASAP; will be there for a couple of days in early October to scout around in person.

Thanks in advance for any help you could provide!

There is North East Independent School District for schools in Northeast SA and the Schertz, Cibolo, Selma, Garden Ridge areas would be also be good places to start looking for more detailed information on schools too.
Have you tried the relocation sticky for the S.A. forum? http://www.city-data.com/forum/san-a...dex-san.htmlIf not, it's a good place to start to get a general idea of what S.A. is like! Good luck!

Howdy, RedWolf. just to prepare you for the change, down here our BBQ is primarily brisket and sausage with some ribs, po' salad and cole slaw and beans.

My folks retired our of Charlotte. NC is beautiful, but you will find we have some outstanding country out this way when you leave the city.

True dat! BBQ is a different animal down here, but it's still good as long as you avoid certain mass-produced stuff like Bill Miller's...

And if you need a recommendation for a good realtor, DM me. We have one officed out of the northside of SA who not only helped us, but numerous others as well. He's the guy that made our transition back from Belgium much easier, and we had a deposit on our current home down after less than a half day of looking! Having a great realtor can make a tremendous difference!

Good luck! M2

just moved to the ne side of Sa too! I would recommend that you stay north of 410 to look for a place to live. NEISD is a good school district. Schertz/Cibolo/Thousand Oaks/O'Conner area good for daycares too. However before you moved into home, besure sure you look up the area in the sex offenders database offered by https://records.txdps.state.tx.us since you have small children.

you're going to like SA, and the ne side. i'm in fort bragg right now and can tell you, weather, well, the hot seasons, are the same fayetteville/raleigh area, not sure where you're at. when i moved to NC during the summer months, it was like i never left san antonio, maybe a few degrees hotter in tx but once its hot, does it really make a difference? lol!
and bbq...is bbq.....the difference is the mesquite used in texas. forget pulled porked, it's not really appreciated in tx but makes up for it with some really great texmex food, NOTHING like it in NC, trust me.

northeast is really great. i can only speak for longs creek elementary, great school. the subdivions are nice and moderately priced, like longs creek, redland oaks, northern hills, longs ridge.

if there's a specific area you're looking at, i mean, super specific, just ask, i can tell you truthfully, i've lived there my whole life and when i moved to NC, it was a difference, but made me realize, the sun doesn't revolve around my hometown. i love it, but i'm glad i moved and will again move elsewhere soon (military), but look forward to moving back to SA after we're done here. you know what i mean? it's very diverse, more so than NC, not just black and white, it's black white hispanic asian, etc. well, you'll see soon i suppose just really glad i had this "eye opener" most people don't get to have. when i "wrote back home" about NC, all i could say was that it was soooo different and i hated it. it wasnt, i was just missing home. and it's a lovely state with lots of history. i've been here over a year and really love the seasons, summer, spring fall and WINTER!

hope you enjoy it, i know i'm jealous! AND san antonio is big city life. much bigger than what you're used to, compared to any city in NC, SA is the 7th largest in US, i believe. it's just really spread out. i used to drive to my job on the northwest side of town, took 45min on the highway going 70 ish.
