I can't quite put my hand on it, but there's something special about San Antonio's DT. It's just so decent and classic, and it's like a downtown from the 1940's. It's amazing how something so simple can be so extraordinary.

Still, if there's one thing that these Texas cities need to learn, it's that we've got to get rid of these ugly parking lots in our downtown.

I agree...

San Antonio's downtown has this living museum quality to it. You feel like you are on some 1940's movie set. The architecture is so distinct yet simple. It conveys a simpler era with complex attention to detail. There is no traffic and no noise. You can park just about anywhere in minutes and enjoy uncrowded walks.

The downtown is probably the single most underutilized attractive collection of older interesting buildings in America.

IF some developer were to ever catch on.....there is so much room for a renaissance gentrification to downtown SA. It is beautiful place that is perfect for condos, shopping, and cafes of modern urban living. But, I actually hope it never happens. I prefer the simple quiet city of today.

Who was it (some famous orator i believe) that said the only truly unique american cities are San Francisco, New Orleans, and San Antonio?

I actually grew up in downtown San Antonio. If you know the area, there is a Denny's by Rivercenter Mall and my house was once there. The number of my house was 111 Elm.....and no it was no nightmare on Elm street! Our grocery store was where the Ripley's Believe It or Not is. It was called H.L.Green. The Alamo was my back yard. Is that awesome or what! I could keep going here but I would run out of space. What wonderful memories I recall of so many things gone past. Even though San Antonio downtown has grown tremendously, when I go downtown it just feels the same. Oh yes, there are different buildings with new names, old buildings with new names, and just the old buildings with the same names. I love this town!

What wonderful photos; thanks so much for sharing.

I have always wished that the city had not grown up around the Alamo. I would love to have seen it outside the city, still in natural surroundings...

*sigh* So much history for us natives.

I'm sorry it doesnt matter how many pics u take of san antonio or how you view it, that is a ugly city PERIOD. When i was a kid we used to go there alot from Houston, and then it was just nice to go to another city, but i went there recently with friends on a trip to Six Flags Fiesta Texas, and we exited on the wrong road, and OMG! i thought i was in a Mexico City slum. I really dont see anything nice in san antonio, but i must admit, the theme park was amazing, and the area around the theme park was ok, but the city overall is just not appealing to me at all. Really, how many times can you actually enjoy the Alamo? really c'mon, everybody in texas has seen it a million times, to be brutally honest, i would rather go to dallas than san antonio. I dont even know how san antonio is the number 1 tourist destination in texas? thats just beyond me.

San Antonio is so small, i dont know how san antonio is the 7th largest city in US. When you get closer to the Houston on I-10 you start to get the feel of a city when katy starts, but when we were going to san antonio, i didnt even know when we entered san antonio city limit, there were just a bunch of trees and burnt dead grass, then suddenly downtown came into view. I hate to be rude, but really San Antonio is not nice, there was graffiti on freeway signs! thats ridiculious! If i was from San Antonio I would move to Austin.

Oh definitely!!! We have absolutely NO graffiti here in Austin...none at all. In fact, I don't think Dallas or Houston have it either....ha ha ha...

San Antonio is gorgeous. What are you all talking about? When you really think about it, in a way, it's downtown is more attractive than Houston's or Dallas'.
