I asked this in the Gardening section a couple of months ago, and received no response, so I thought I'd ask in the SA forum since it might be a local problem.

My crape myrtles (3 different species in 3 different spots in the front yard) all had hundreds of buds that never opened. I'd say about 1/3 opened up and that's it. I still have tons of closed buds all over the trees right now.

I am baffled as to what would cause this, considering the rain we had before their blooming season. Did anyone else have the same issue, and what might I do to prevent this from occurring next year?

Thanks in advance.

Yes. My crape myrtles did not bloom and I too was wondering about it. My neighbor says that its because I haven't pruned it but I didnt want to butcher them like the way landscapers do. Still no flowers

Hrm. Well, I actually pruned mine. I wonder if I pruned too late. I did it in March, and we had no freezing temps after I did it.

Maybe it's something to do with the drought the prior year? Especially if it's happening to yours, too.

Ooooh. Probably not since April. Would that do it, then? We never had to fertilize our CM's in Houston, but I realize the soil is different here.

It is not pruning. There are CM in my neighborhood that have never been pruned and they were beautiful this summer. I hate to see people prune them down the way you see around town.

I try not to commit "crape murder" lol Just a simple pruning. It's horrible what some folks do to them!

Stupid question: But what do you mean by fertilize? Mulching it? I mean we fertilized our lawn but don't know what to do when it comes to the Crape Myrtles and trees.

My neighbor ignores hers completely, and they're easily 40 feet tall and bloom like crazy.
