I noticed the hotels are booked on Saturday night before the marathon on Sunday. On Friday, the hotels are pretty wide open. Why is that? Do people not come in for the marathon until Saturday? Will the streets be crowded Friday night or not?

Maybe because a lot of people who are local, including surrounding areas, book a room only the night before so they are not having to get up extra early to fight traffic and find parking. My cousins and I did that for this past San Jose rnr. She lives in Modesto so we drove up the day before for packet pick up, carbo loaded and rested that night. It was nice to wake up rested and not rushed and had an under 5 minute walk to the start line.

and the fact that hotels realize that a downtown event is happening, so they hike up their rates.

They moved the start line to downtown from AH this year so I am sure that's part of the reason as well. The closest place to get dropped off by the old start line was almost 2 miles away. 1 mile to walk to the corral and almost another mile to get to the actual start line. Starting downtown is much better and will make for a more interesting route. Lots of places to park surrounding downtown to get to the start line pretty easily, too.
