Do you ever go to Freetail Brewing? I'm sure they get a lot of people interested in the brewing process. The owner used to post here at one time. I guess he's a little too busy now, but he seems like a pretty cool guy. Scott, I think....he is/was a professor at UTSA. Anyway, he might be a resource.

That happens with moonshine (which is distilled) because of contamination with poisonous substances like methanol. IT CAN NOT HAPPEN WITH HOMEBREWED BEER. In fact there's nothing that can grow in fermenting beer that can kill or blind you.

YouTube has plenty of helpful videos, too.

The folks at Home Brew Party are friendly and helpful. I think they even give classes. Their prices aren't too bad and once you switch to buying in bulk (50-pound sacks of grain) you can save a lot of money. I just poured a pint of my brew from the keg and it tastes great. It cost me the equivalent of $3-4 per 6-pack to make.

I really wanted to start with all-extracts first, just because I don't really want to buy or manufacture the equipment that is needed for an all-grain brew.

I'm stuck in DC for another 2 weeks... but I'll check out Home Brew Party when I get back. Thanks

Extract brewing is a bit easier but definitely more expensive. I brewed about a dozen extract batches before moving to all-grain. Some were ok, but my all-grain beers have been MUCH tastier. The only expense was a rectangular cooler, a ball valve assembly and a filter - it was under a hundred bucks and can be done even more cheaply with improvised equipment.

I was about to add the same spot. I have been meaning to get in there because I want to to make some brews and don't mind paying a premium for convenience and esp. knowledge while i'm getting started.

Well, if they can come within 20 or so dollars for a startup kit, I'll definitely purchase local. However, if they're not even going to try and compete, I'll order online.

Northern Brewery only charges 7 dollars shipping.

Plus I can't even find a website for the second place listed.
