Timbo's - which is near the pearl brewery on broadway are my favorite in town. Chesters and Madrid's aren't far behind.

I completely forgot about Cheesy Jane's. I love that place, but for whatever reason I happen to like the 1604 & Bandera location the most. Fudruckers rocks too!

Interesting that this thread popped up again. Just last week I was visiting with a friend who is the proprietor of one of the very high end steak houses here in town. He said "In and Out" is one of the highest grossing burger chains in the country. He actually went through the process of inquiring about opening one up in Texas. "In and Out" said they had absolutely NO interesting in coming to Texas.

I wonder if they would respond to consumer requests? I don't think collecting money would help, but maybe a flood of mail from fans and "would be" fans might get their attention. Maybe it's time to get pen and paper out....no email requests.....but DO email your Texas friends to do the same!

Whaddaya think????

They are not likely to move out to Texas anytime soon. The business is family owned, and the (apparently) controlling part of the family has expressly stated that they want to keep it small to preserve its uniqueness and quality. That being said, the granddaughter and heir apparent has indicated an intent to expand (she was apparently the impetus behind the expansion into Arizona), but she's in her 20's. So we have to wait.

IN-N-OUT Burger (broken link)

Okay, now note that word 'history' in the above link. [ETA: Oops, the word history doesnt appear, LOL, but that's what it is...] Now I LIVED this history right smack dab down the highway from the very first little drive thru.
I am NOT kidding!

Harry had a meat store and he would fry up burgers, little ones, on an electric griddle in the storefront. He'd give these little burgers out as samples and then he started selling them; this led to bigger ones and ultimately, at the urging of customers, he opened his very first In N Out Burger drive through on Garvey Ave off the freeway that is known there locally as "the San Bernardino Freeway". You can see the big yellow boomerang looking arrow from the highway. It is located in Baldwin Park, and the meat market still operates today, I believe. They began, in the late
'60's, early '70's, long after opening their first 'burger STAND', selling the burger patties frozen, in 5-10 lb boxes, from the meat market. Groups would buy them, like Little League teams, Boy Scouts, church groups and have big bbq's or sell them to earn camp money and stuff... and individuals (including me) and try to replicate the In n Out burgers from the stands.... couldn't be done.... I know I tried flame broiling, different seasonings, no seasonings, can't be done....
I can't tell you if this meat market is still there....

So, I grew up and went to high school in Covina California, and, along with some other local treats that we had nearby, trips to In-n-Out were frequent and well worth it!

If you read the history page I've linked, you'll see that the sons have also died. I had read a few years ago, that after Mom died, the brothers ran the company for a while and then sold to a corporation, obviously outside the company. I don't recall where I read this and, for that matter, it may have been the grandsons, because this link says the sons of Harry Snyder died. It doesn't sound like, from this link, that is outside the family now....

When I go back to California now, I have to admit, they aren't quite the same. They are still good, and I still make my trip there (first stop from the airport!!!), but they just aren't the same.....

No indication on their website that they plan to expand to Texas. I would still eat there FREQUENTLY, even though that original INDESCRIBABLE goodness they had is not quite the same.......

Oh, one more little trivia tidbit on Harry Snyder and his DELICIOUS empire...

He refused to pay to have business listings for his - ultimately - numerous burger stands, so you could never find "In n Out" in the phone book....
But you could find NUMEROUS listings for "Harry Snyder" that just happened to have the same addresses as.... yep, Harry's In n Out locations......

Not sure how he got away with this.... perhaps some phone company managers availed themselves of a lifetime of In n Out lunches during their phone co careers.... who knows????? Not sure if this is still true either.
I may have met Harry, I don't know; I'm guessing that, sure, yeah, he undoubtedly had to be behind that counter at least once when I went meat shopping there; his sons also. In that time, they were a very hands-on family

I know I am not going to make many friends by what I am going to type but this is our experience at a Vegas In and Out.

Walked up and noticed the menu. Umm.?? It reminded me of “My Cousin Vinny” when they go to the restaurant and the menu read,

Breakfast

Lunch

Dinner

LOL, I ordered the “dinner” (double). To me it was a regular burger and fries. Nothing too special but my wife… Well lets just say that the name lived up to itself for her. She didn’t care too much for it.
Sorry, we weren't impressed.

I'm a San Antonio transplant living in San Diego,CA , and I love In-and-Out. Fatburger is great, too (strangely I've been to the one at Huebner Oaks but not to any in CA yet).

SA Greed, I know 2 people who have problems digesting In-and-Out burgers.. sadly it's probably not an isolated problem!

I love Whataburger and Sonic, but nothing--and I mean nothing--no In and Out, no Steak-n-Shake--beats a Mushroom Swiss Burger from Clay's in west Houston. Holy crap.
