As far as layoffs are concerned, I don't think the City has had any in recent years that involve full-time, permanent employees. The City has, however, been thinning the ranks by eliminating some vacant postions. Some employees have had their positions eliminated, but the City has been placing those employees in comparable vacant positions in other City departments. There may have been some involuntary layoffs in the early 1990s, but I don't think that's something that has happened very many times over the years. Overall, I would consider the City to be among the more stable employers.

As far as advantages and disadvantages, I expect that would vary from one department to another. Also, the type of position you would be seeking could aslo factor into the equation. There are many different City departments, with different functions and environments. The City employees with years of service under their belt, who have also worked for multiple departments during their tenure, and maybe have some private-sector experience, could probably best answer a question like that.
