There are rest areas in NM, Arizona and Cal as I recall..varying upkeep. Bathroom facilities, parking areas and shaded picnic tables and such. Many places of interest also!

We did a similar drive and had to drive it over two days due to family that we had with us. We stopped in Las Cruces, NM and it was a good halfway point for the trip.

As far as rest areas, I remember that we stopped at one a little past Fort Stockton, TX that was well maintained. We ended up stopping in Phoenix to eat, so we didn't need a rest area there.

Rest areas can be dangerous, especially with the drug cartels working their way into the border states. Stop at well populated convenience stores instead.

Thumbs up to Ft. Stockton and Las Cruces. Make sure you fill your tank when you get to El Paso!

Texas has the best rest areas. In my travels between El Paso & SA, both east & west, they are very clean & populated. During the day the maintenance crew is visible. All Texas rest areas with bathrooms have free wifi. As you travel on the Interstate you are even told the next number of miles to the next rest area.

Having doggies, we stop at every rest area. Doggie areas & plenty of water.

When traveling at night, many times we have stopped at the rest areas for some rest. We always park in a lit area, close to the truckers and we use our windshield sun shiled to block out the light.

Cheapest gas between SA & El Paso are in Junction, TX & Van Horn, TX. The Valero in Junction usually has the cheapest gas and a McDonald's. Its a state of the art Valero. The older employees at the register inside the Valero usually have an attitude. Kinda reminds me of the pre civil rights era. McDonald's has a very young, friendly & energetic staff. In Van Horn we stop at Pilot... a little older truck stop but clean & efficient.

The gas prices in Ft. Stockton are usually 15 to 20 cents higher then in Van Horn.

In El Paso, cheapest gas is at Rudy's BBQ at the Yarbrough Exit.

When you get to the New Mexico State Line, there are 2 welcome centers for Texas & New Mexico. These welcome centers are staffed during the day time. Great place to get a free state map from the respective states. Plenty of info on all areas of both states.

You can tell when you are leaving Texas & entering New Mexico.... Texas has better asphalt on the Interstate.

Happy Motoring!

fill up in arizona before you get to cali as gas prices are higher there. whoever said stuff about drug cartels sounds kind of silly. there's nothing to worry about unless you cross into mexico.

ACTUALLY there are parts of New Mexico that now have signs up warning folks not to enter, as there is cartel activity there.

You SHOULDN'T have to worry about it, but you do.
