Ya know, after FINALLY visiting IKEA after about a hundred years this weekend (I went to the Houston one like in 1995) - the one in Round Rock (outside Austin). I would really check their kitchens out if I were you and interested in purchasing a MCM home.
I always kinda thought of IKEA as very Target-ish, a cheaply-built furniture kinda place, too trendy, always used on MTV's "The Real World," etc. BUT I was VERY impressed with their newer lines of kitchens this weekend, and after comparing them with Kraftmaid's new "modern euro" line (Venecia?), which look VERY similar, I think IKEA quality is way better and WAY less than Kraftmaid. Plus, all the refurbed Eichler Homes in SoCal seem to be using IKEA kichens and these are 700K-1 million $$$ MCM tract homes!
That's the direction I'm headed now in my 50's pad, new Ikea kitchen, and new IKEA bathrooms, their Danish minimalist look works very well with MCM style without breaking the bank AND the style - just add some cool mosaic tiles, modernist furnishings/bric-a-brac (a George Nelson Wall Clock, perhaps a small Eero Saarinen Tulip Table with matching chairs (which unfortunately, will cost you as much as the kitchen! BUT you can find repros for decent prices) - and VOILA - INSTANT MCM!
I would also recommend buying a copy of "Atomic Ranch" magazine for ideas, and to bone up on the MCM look/lifestyle. They also have a ton of ads that are helpful.
CHEERIO!

Ikea
Good to hear googie!! We always loved Ikea when we lived in CA a million years a ago, but with folks saying that the quality of some of the stuff was crummy, I wondered if we weren't remembing correctly. Those new Kraftmaid Venencia lines caught my eye, too, and I also thought some of the Ikea stuff looked very similar in design AND convenience features. We've been planning on using Ikea for our kitchen & bathroom re-do's and can't wait to make a scouting trip up to Round Rock sometime soon! Did you get the stuff to start yours???
(Thanx for the tip on Atomic Ranch, too! Will be looking for it, where do you normally find it?)

Atomic Ranch is a great quarterly mag completely devoted to MCM. I've been a subscriber since the first issue. Unfortunately, since it is only in it's second year of printing, not many stores have it available. I know you can get a copy at Barnes and Noble. If I were you, Jules, I would just go to the Atomic Ranch website and just order a subscription. I promise you won't regret it. They also have a book (broken link) by the same name on their website and it is amazing.
Another great MCM resource is LottaLiving. Folks there have been great and have a plethora of MCM knowledge.
If you or googie are interested in a IKEA kitchen, I recommend you visit this site, they're also extremely helpful.
Cheers!

Hey Pretty Hate Machine, will ya bite the hand that feeds you?! hahaha
Have you checked out Olmos Park Terrace? I see some very nice homes there that are older...maybe not the mcm style you're looking for but they have that feel and can probably be modified.
And IKEA is freakin' great. I love that place. Yes, it's cheap but it's trendy and you just cannot find that style anywhere else.

for googie2525
Just thought you would like to know that the Monticello Park MCM you talked about on page 2 is for sale again... this time for "only" $449,000!!!
The website of the realtor (the one based in Alamo Heights) has some wonderful pics of the interior.
I honestly don't think that the home will sell for this much, but the current owners (who I heard are moving to an old New Orleans home) have done some beautiful restoration work to it.

I WANT THAT HOUSE!!!! Man, how awesome a place is this???
Just FYI I zillowed it, and while I know that zillow is off a bit, it lists as valued at $281K. Just a TAD bit of a markup at $449K don't you think???
Gotta love it tho...it is very nice indeed!
The address is 349 Mary Louise Drive if anyone wants to look it up on the MLS. 16 VERY neat pics to enjoy!!!
