I'd love to pack up and make a weekend trip so my daughter can be around snow. What's a good place within driving distance?

1. Wait until it snows in Dallas.
2. Drive there before it melts.

AFAIK, it snows everywhere in Oklahoma. You can get there in less than 10 hours. OTOH, this will be a La Nina winter. That means less winter precipitation than average in this part of the country. You might have better luck with your quest some other year.

I've lived in the upper Midwest and in upstate NY in the country's snowiest large city. During those 11 years, I had a lifetime's worth of snow. I can't imagine wanting to go somewhere to drive in it!

If you like mountains, go to the Guadalupe Mountains at the Texas and New Mexico border. Wait till the snows come first.

Cloudcroft, New Mexico is right at 10 hours according to Google Maps. There is a snow ski area there. Better areas are just a little further North in New Mexico.

I don't know about West Texas,
but I would think your best bet is Dallas or Oklahoma.
When the artic air comes down from Canada, it seems to hit Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma the hardest.

Just be VERY CAREFUL about freezing rain and ice on the road.
It is exactly the same as walking on ice, sometime you are fine and when you less expect you are sliding all over.

Here's the only map showing average annual snowfall, but it starts at 8"

I vote for New Mexico. I lived in Dallas for 20 years and getting nice fluffy snow is rare without black ice under it. It's also short lived and rarely predictable. On top of that....the flat plains with snow on them is not really all that pretty.

If you want to make it memorable for her...the mountains are the best. New Mexico is close enough and would be beautiful for her to experience snow for the first time. Have fun!

From NM, The closest would be Cloudcroft. It's exactly 10 hrs. It's really nice up there, but if there is too much snow, the roads could get closed. The Lodge is up there and they have a small ski slope. If you can spare another hour, then you can drive up to Ruidoso. The roads are better (4 lanes) and is not as steep of a drive.
I would go for Cloudcroft because you are guaranteed to see snow.
to get to Cloudcroft, you take 1-10 to el paso, then hwy 54 to Alamogorodo, then hwy 82 to cloudcroft.
to Ruidoso, it is the same, to Alamogordo, but take Hwy 70 to Ruidoso.
