OK, that's too strong a word; I deserve the tongue. I once overheard someone at a restaurant describe SA that way and it just stuck. But it is a little slow and sleepy, you have to admit. There's much to like here, but for me it's one of the downsides (to others might be an attraction or at least not a mark against it). Cheers!

I don't think that anybody has made any comments about this.
But I've noticed that San Antonio's economy is almost completely military (medical) or tourism. Another thing that I've noticed is that anybody with a Phd in any scientific field in San Antonio is as weird as a flying fish.

What about Houston, Dallas and Austin?

That's gradually changing, Dopo - finally. One of my biggest complaints over the years - City Council would go gaga over the chance to bring tourism into town - but completely ignore the manufacturing sector. Tech is finally being courted - which will help tremendously.

I don't really see nothing special about Austin.

PhDs - as compared to those in other locales? I know them from all over. I don't we have higher ratio of strange/normal as other cities.

Not knowing Houston and Dallas well, I do find more snooty folks in SA - old money types as compared to new money types in Austin. I prefer the later. But you can ignore them.

San Antonio = More tourist-oriented, families in the burbs, largely Hispanic in the city, strong military presence.
Houston = Less tourist-oriented, international vibe, very eclectic, big business city, major metropolis.
Dallas = Big business city, very concerned with outward appearance to the point the city looks almost sterile, keeping up with the Jones', major metropolis.
Austin = Large presence of the university/college scene, state goverment, high-tech oriented, smaller metropolis.

The real foodie scene in Texas is in Houston, without a doubt. As far as really great and notable restaurants, chefs, and very impressive and diverse mix of foods.
Have not been very impressed in Austin for this, though it's improving.

I wouldn't say so, I get the impression it's more like people don't concern themselves with your personal life there. Very live and let live, as they say. Actually I find it more tolerant than Austin, because in Austin there is very much a status quo.... even if that status quo leans "liberal" (for Texas) and pro many other things, that you won't always fit in if you're not in with those ideals. Which I find rather ironic, actually. Austin seems to attract lots of hipster types and those disillusioned with where they came from, looking for something that may or may not be there. Austin is the city in Texas that has been hyped up by the magazines and top 10 lists almost a ridiculous amount, to the point where it has become misleading I think.

Ok, not to be too blunt about this, but all you need to do to see what kind of city and culture you're dealing with, is to tune into the New Year's Eve celebration coverage and check out the crowd. That gives you a clue as to a city's true demographic. In San Antonio, the crowd was all fat people in sweats and baseball caps--for a New Year's Eve celebration!! Anybody want to write in here and report that you got the same crowds in Dallas or Houston? (I bet not.)

I think you might be 100% right.

Sweats. LOL, them are eatin' pants. The only sweat those pants have seen was produced by consuming a too-hot salsa.

That was a free celebration, though, wasn't it? I'm hoping some of the private celebrations saw better attire.
