Looking to go to San Anton this weekend. Wondering what the most historic restaurant is that has the best food. Doesn't have to be Tex Mex.
Have been to the 410 Diner (yeah I know it's not that old, but has a 1950s feel) and it was pretty good.

The Tip Top Cafe on Fredericksburg Rd. near Babcock Rd. It's the oldest best p;ace in SA. I think some of the wait staff are original too. Make sure to have the onion rings.

A little off topic here. As much as it pains me to say this, cuz I've been going since I was a kid (30 yrs) and have LOVED this place....but it seems like the quality at Tip Top has been slipping a little ever since it's run on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. I used to believe that their CFS was the best in the city with lots of flavor and the awesome grave. Now it seems like it's really bland. The onion rings are still the best though.

As for one of the best/oldest....I couldn't tell you how "old" this place is but Los Barrios is always good.

The Grey Moss Inn (in Grey Forest, just outside of SA/Helotes) serves original recipes from the 1920's (if I remember correctly, I'm sure someone can correct me on the date). The rustic atmosphere is great, so is the wine, and the food too of course. Here's a link: Fine Dining, Seafood, Steaks, Steakhouse San Antonio - Grey Moss Inn - Grey Moss Inn

I went to Tip Top once because I would hear from others how great their CFS and onion rings were. It turns out the CFS wasn't great enough to have me coming back again.

I didn't get to try out the onion rings however.

I was not impressed by Tip Top either.

A bit off topic, but, I have been to several restaurants that have been featured on DDD. (Never been to The Cove, though. I need to check it out). 1 here, 2 in Austin, 1 in Houston, and 1 in Tacoma,WA, and only the last two did I think were worth the trip.

Shilo's, downtown on Commerce Street. Its been open since World War I, it's cheap, and you simply cannot find better split pea soup (and homemade rootbeer) anywhere. La Fonda on Main has been open since the 1920s or 30s as well, and although the menu is not original (unfortunately), it still has the ambiance. Jacala has been around forever, and their menu has not changed in 40 years as far as I can tell. Too bad Karam's closed (sniff, sniff). The Barn Door has been open since the 40s, and still makes a good steak at a decent price. I'd also second Grey Moss Inn if you are looking for upscale.
