I think when redistricting occurs every couple of years the state looks at travel distances. The problem is that for schools like Eagle Pass and Del Rio, there are not enough similarly sized schools close by. I don't know if they receive a stipend from the state because half of their games involve travel or not.

The reason that the outer districts have to travel is that many of the inner city schools have dropped in classification. When I was in high school in the '80's, all of the SAISD, Edgewood, and Harlandale schools were 5A. Now, most are 4A.

Some off topic posts were deleted above. Members on both sides of the topic have weighed in forcefully. If there's nothing more to say on this issue, maybe this is where the discussion should end until school board budget-cutting decisions begin to make news?

Interesting that NEISD Board has decided that due to budget situation they've decided to put their bond issue on hold

Part of that bond issue was a new district baseball stadium.

Another part was a new middle school at Bulverde and Evans. Now the district will have to redraw attendance area lines to accommodate all of the new residents in that area.

Maybe all schools should consider this in lieu of eliminating sports

Some school districts could probably do without a police department, but I'm sure some need them. SAPD doesn't even have enough cops to deal with issues outside of school districts. Another cheaper option would be to hire private security if they're okay with bad service.

The table that accompanied that story showed that athletics comprises around 1% or 2% of most school district budgets. The highest percentage of just over 4% was in one of the smallest area districts, Medina Valley. Medina Valley is preparing to drop B&G soccer to reduce their athletic budget.

Even if every single area school district went cold turkey and dropped athletics, it wouldn't fix as little as a 5% budget shortfall.

$11 million is a lot of money and I think that's much more than they spend on administration which everyone was hollering for them to get rid of although you can't slash 100% of administration. $11 million is a couple hundred teacher salaries, but at least NISD doesn't plan on cutting anyone's jobs.
