San Antonio's new radio station
KROV - San Antonio Community Radio Inc.

KROV community radio goes on the air - San Antonio Express-News

At 6 p.m. Sunday, San Antonio's newest radio station, KROV 91.7-HD2 FM, will go on the air.
Hearing its call letters over the airwaves for the first time will be an emotional moment for the city's African American community and supporters who've longed for a point on the radio dial to call their own.
The 24-hour, noncommercial, urban-contemporary HD station will join about 20 others in San Antonio requiring a hybrid digital radio. Its musical format will consist of “timeless R&B hits” as well as gospel, jazz, hip-hop and San Antonio-produced music of all genres, from Sunny Ozuna to the Rick Cavender Band, said General Manager Tommy Calvert Jr.

Never mind. I don't have an HD radio. I wonder if I can find one on the cheap.

I hope they broadcast on the internet, because I don't even know what an HD radio looks like

I have an older vehicle, so I know my car doesn't have an HD radio. I think HD radio stations have only been available for a couple of years. You can buy a portable HD radio for less than $50; you might even find some for less than $30. I think it costs about $100 for a car radio. I saw a pretty cheap adapter on Amazon, but it doesn't have good reviews.

It's a shame that there is finally an urban station and most people probably won't be able to hear it. I hope they'll eventually raise enough money to broadcast on analog airwaves. I think some of the local stations are already broadcasting on digitally. I think it's almost like when you watch local digital tv stations and you're able to pick up extra channels. Newer Zunes pick up HD radio.

HD Radio... wonder if the 2008 gets that station?? Never heard of that before today.

I have recently tuned in to the FM station by accident (regular XM listener) and I stumbled upon 91.7 or 97.1. This station plays jazz standards and some more obscure tracks as well. A very good station, it provides a nice change of pace from the XM playlists. I believe this station is broadcast from a college, maybe St. Mary's or Incarnate Word???

Anywho...I hope they don't nix this station for the new one, although a R&B station is long overdue.

You can listen to it online for free.

If you have an auxiliary jack in your car, you might be able to connect a cheap HD radio to it with a line-in cord. Another option would be to buy a cassette car adapter if you have a cassette player in your vehicle. I play my mp3 player through my car stereo by using the cassette player since I don't have an auxiliary jack; it plugs right into the headphone jack.
