I am from Pennsylvania, very close to Philadelphia. I have been here for almost a year and still have not found a decent cheesesteak or chinese place in town. Anyone on here from Southeast PA, New Jersey or New York that knows of a cheesesteak or general tsao's chicken place that makes it like northeasterners know how to make it? I am talking about the kind of cheesesteaks you find in Philly and the kind of Chinese food you find in downtown New York.

So far I am impressed with the BBQ that Texas has to offer but not with the Pizza, Cheesesteaks or Chinese Food.

Thanks.

I hear ya!! I am originally from Boston, myself. I have also been to Gino's and Pat's in Philadelphia.

For cheesesteaks, well, I haven't really found much. Steak Escape (mall) and Texadelphia are so-so. Malik Rose used to have a Philly's Phamous at the Quarry, also so-so.

Now for pizza, there are two places I can recommend: Miss Ellies on Bitters near 281, and Julian's on Embassy Row. Miss Ellie's delivers; both are closed Sundays.

The chinese food here is, well, again, haven't found much. It is hard to describe the difference between East Coast Chinese and Chinese here. Whenever we go back East, Boston, NY, Phl, etc., chinese is one of our must haves.

I also miss Dunkin Donuts quite a bit. Yes, I know there is one here, but it really isn't the same. Plus it's far away!

Sorry I'm not much help, but I do feel your pain!

For chinese try Hung Fong on Broadway.

For Pizza my personal favorite is Big Lou's on the southeast side.

For cheesesteaks, you have me there. The only one I've ever had was the one at Malik Rose's restaurant. I liked it but can't compare it with an actual Philly cheesesteak.

However, there is a place called Lenny's Lenny's Sub Shop - Fresh made Subs - authentic Philly cheesesteaks - Franchises Available that does Philly food, they have three or four stores in the SA area.

There's also a place called Philly Connection on Callaghan and IH 10. I've never tried it but I've seen it a few times and do want to try it.

Most authenticate Philly Cheesteaks by far are at Delaware Sub Shop on Austin Highway.

Oh - I so miss Dunkin Donuts! I know there isn't one somewhere in teh city - I haven't been to it but sad to hear it is not the same. Whenever I go home I have to get their coffees and iced coffees EVERY day while I am there. Krispy Kreme sucks by comparison.

I"m not a cheesesteak fan at all.....not even supposedly good ones (I'm told).....but I do love chinese.

I don't know where you live, but there are two good places in the Alamo Heights/NE area. Formosa Gardens on loop 410 has never disappointed us. It looks like it would be expensive, but surprisingly it's reasonable for a nice restaruant.....more formal setting than most Chinese restaurants. It's not a chain. The other is Hsiu Yu's on Broadway about two blocks south of 410. Pronounced Shoo Yoo! They have been written up many times as one of SA's favorites and lots of celebrities have been patrons. They are also very reasonable....especially at lunch....and always crowded at noon, so get there early.

Then there is the popular PF Changs at the Quarry.....and yes, a big chain, but Peter Flemming knows how to do restaruants! Top quality service, very nice ambience and great food. It can be expensive, but not outrageous.

I used to like Hung Fongs on Broadway, but my last two experiences there have not been good. Maybe I hit them on a bad day.....but there are too many other good choices in my opinion.

Florios in Alamo Heights is a small mom and pop restaurant that very popular. You walk in and you feel like you've been transported to a little corner of New York. "mom" sits at the table and barks at everyone......but she's very loveable when you talk to her! All of them are.

Capparelli's at Broadway and 410......has great pizza and Italian breads. Their other dishes are so-so. Another mom and pop local success....been around for ages!

Of course, everything depends on what you're used to! I don't even like Mexican food in Dallas compared to SA......but when I lived there I learned to adapt to what's out there. I'm sure you'll find your favs eventually. My dad used to talk about the Chili Rellenos in California.....he said he'd never had them in Texas that were as good.....but he seemed to manage ok without them...

did you say chinese? seems like every corner has one. but the place i frequent are: taipei, china latina, golden wok, spice, formosa garden, firewok, peiwei, pf changs.

but i think austin has better more authentic chinese/asian restaurants. i really like first chinese bbq, ding ho, hunan ranch, - have not found anything similar here in SA.
