Does anyone have word as to whether or not a REI store will be coming to San Antonio in the future? I've talked with the fine managers at the Austin locations (yes locations being plural) and they have no input.

You can find most of the equipment they sell cheaper on the Internet. Not that a store wouldn't be nice.

I doubt it. Maybe in 10 years. SA is not a city with active folks like in Austin. People here are fine with stores such as Academy, unfortunately. I would say there are a lot more folks down here that like to hunt in terms of outdoor sports.

Sure thing, it'll be next to the Trader Joe's and just down the street from Disney!

I don't know, but hve you checked out Whole Earth Provisions? Similar I believe. Probably not as much selection though.

Your right, not as much of a selection and higher priced at that. Good Sports is another store I frequent, but still not the same. It does work in a pinch though.

I save on most items by being a member of REI, but by the time I figure in the fuel to get to Austin and back it is a mute point. That's why we reserve our trips up there for times that we have other stuff we're wanting to do while in town.

People there (besides just a few) would have to be remotely interested in the outdoors for there to be one. Look around next time you're at HEB, and you can kind of do the math on that...

And outdoors does not mean hunting.

Sad but true. Plenty of us like the non-hunting outdoors, but not enough to support an REI. I usually buy online, and am a member. I used to have to go to Austin for work trips, so would save my visits for then. However, I also try to avoid buying a bunch of stuff in general, and everything I've gotten from there is long lasting. And when I go to CA to visit relatives, there's an REI just down the road, so I visit then.

Scuba Steve - are you no longer in SA?

I like the idea of an REI, but something tells me it would be lost on most of San Antonio. REI is for folks who enjoy more than just sitting in a deer blind, drinking beer and getting a shot off now and then. It's an outdoor enthusiasts store for those who like to sweat a little (or a lot).

That being said, I do hope they give SA a shot. Having another option for outdoor gear... for fitness purposes... is never a bad thing.
