New car taxes
I'm considering buying a new car before I move to S.A. area.We have no sales taxes in Oregon. Can anyone tell me what they would be if I bought a 30,000.00 car in the S.A. area.

I believe the Texas base tax is 6.25%, no matter which area of Texas you buy from.

Check with TXDOT: Vehicle Registration
Depending on how soon after you purchase a car from out of state, you may need to pay something when you get here...

You're correct.I called and if I purchase a vehicle 30 days prior to moving to Texas and upon registering it I would have to pay sales tax on sticker price.(I currently live in Oregon-no sales taxes)

If you trade in a car, then the value of your trade-in will be subtracted from the taxable amount. For example, your trade-in is worth $10,000, then you would pay 6.25% on the remaining $20,000 ($1,250).

Thanks for the info-good point.I just find it hard to believe they can leagally do that.I wonder how old your new car has to be before you're exempt from that law.

Car tax makes me so mad
If you buy a used car for $10,000 but it is valued at $15,000, then you pay tax on $15,000 (or actually, I think it is 80% of the $15,000 value). I just "stole" a 1998 F150 XLT for my daughter for $3000, I have to go today to transfer the title and I am sure when they look it up the value is around $5500. So I have to pay tax on 80% of that. I understand why they changed that law but it still makes me mad.
And another thing, back in 1998 I bought a used 1997 Ford truck and I paid tax on it, of course. I only kept it about 6 months because the mileage was horrible so I sold it and the next guy paid tax on it again. So within 18 months of this trucks life three people had paid sales tax on it, I just don't think that is right.

Many states do this, and have been for years. When I was little, and my parents were moving from Mississippi to Massachusetts (military), they were subject to the same thing. And we're 1970 here.
In Mass. there is even a yearly excise tax on your cars. In TX, once it's registered, there is only an annual inspection (just went to 15 I think), plus annual registration (around 55-65).
Technically, the TX state tax must be paid on ANYTHING purchased outside of the state and brought into TX within 30 days. Because the logistics of enforcing this are impossible, they concentrate on obvious stuff, such as a car.

Could be worse. Here in VA, they charge you an annual 'personal property tax' on your car, as well as sales tax when you buy the darn thing.
I pay about $400 a year on my car alone.
