Wanting to move to San Antonio
I opened a similar thread in the Austin forum
Hello,
me and my family are thinking about moving to San Antonio or Austin
and we are doing some research about it.
I'll go ahead and tell you guys some things about me and my family:
I grew up in Venezuela and moved to the US 13 years ago when I was 15,
the whole time I've lived in a small town in Mid-Missouri (the Ozarks) and now I live in Kansas City. After so many years in this area up here I would be more than happy to move somewhere hotter, with more hispanics, where I don't feel uncomfortable speaking spanish to my 3 year old son or my 1 year old son (I'm teaching them spanish)
My wife doesn't like too much the idea of moving to Venezuela (doesn't have to do with politics) so we thought that a way to compromise would be to move to a very hispanic city. We've done a lot of research and decided that San Antonio/Austin would be an ideal place. We've visited them in April and loved it, and we went ahead and visited Corpus Christi, too.
The reasons I like San Antonio/Austin are:
- Warmer weather and shorter winters (I hate winter)
- Close to the beach (I love the beach and the sea)
- I'm fully bilingual, but rather speak spanish than english.
- We'll be close enough to Mexico that we can drive to Mexico to take vacations over there.
- I rather be around liberals and mexicans than conservatives and rednecks.
- I'm hoping that there's jobs for engineers in San Antonio. I'm an electrical engineer and work in a factory.

In my opinion, San Antonio would be better for you given that it's more of an Hispanic town. But keep in mind that San Antonio and Bexar county supported Bush in both elections (but not by a landslide by any means), so it is politically more conservative overall than is Austin. Good luck!

San Antonio has a way more Hispanic influence than Austin. Austin is more liberal, and since you have a young child San Antonio in my opinion is better to bring up a family. With that said any city in TX is probably better than where you're at.

I am originally from Kansas and no exactly what you mean with the rednecks (no offense). I also lived in Austin for 6 years and moved to San Antonio about 6 months ago.
Austin is a great place to go to college, but San Antonio is a great place to raise a family.

So I guess you would be a great person to talk to,
can you tell me some more of how it was like for you moving from Kansas to Austin/San Antonio.
What do you think about crime rate, housing, jobs, latin culture (I'm hispanic, so I look forward to that), etc.
