The water supply in San Antonio and the surrounding area has been getting some attention again (on front page of SA Express News today). Add the fact that we are in Stage 1 of Drought Restrictions and the on-going housing boom in San Antonio and the surrounding areas and you might want to learn more about our main water supply, the Edwards Aquifer. Below is an excellent web site I found that has everything. It has maps, pictures, history (anyone remember the Ron Pucek Living Waters Catfish Farm? Well, it is in there along with pictures), and the different Drought Restriction Levels.

This site was put together and maintained by Greg Eckhardt (an environmental scientist who has been studying the Edwards Aquifer and issues surrounding it since 1972).

If you're moving to San Antonio our surrounding areas, you will hear about this aquifer often during drought conditions:

It sounds like you have already done some reading on the aquifer, so you probably already know that SA basically gets all its water there. Short term (now to ~40 years, just a guess) there probably wont be any 'real' problems. Long-term, the whole central TX area may have issues due to the project population growth. A lot of the press is related to trying to head off these potential problems now by getting people to even talk about it. Very touchy subject, water.....

Default San Antonio Water Supply

San Antonio has been trying to increase its future water supply as conservation alone will not keep up with the growth. They are working several deals to bring water from the North and East. Some water is already coming from outside sources and is pumped to the Northwest portion of Bexar County.

Here is SAWS web site (it has their water plan):
