Anne Marie's in the Med Center. It's at Fredericksburg and Hamilton Wolfe tucked into the little shopping center there. Kinda hard to see. It's delish and everything there is made from scratch.

Spice Rack - on Wurzbach in between i-10 and Fredericksburg. Great food.

Madhatter's Tea in Southtown off Beauregard.

WD Deli on Broadway.

Casa de Luz in Austin is a unique macrobiotic restaurant. Check out their web page. Only one thing on the menu each night, and you sit at communal tables so you meet new people. Its attached to a school so the kiddies have a playground to use while you eat.

Another favorite is The Cove (thanx again for the recommendation googie!), it's a quirky place (includes a car wash and laundromat), but they have great fish & shrimp tacos (and a great spinach salad comes with the "sampler" plates) and some yummy vegetarian choices, as well as salads, sandwiches, burgers, and a fairly extensive beer selection. What would be your recommendations at Green's?

Anyone who has ever been to Green will tell you in a heartbeat... you MUST have the sweet potato fries. They also have great hibiscus tea, and the chocolate cake is to die for. I'm not a fan of "faux meat" items, like the chicken-fried wheat meat, etc., but I've had the reuben sandwich and it really tastes like corned beef. My absolute favorite item on the menu is the portobello mushroom steak sandwich...mmm! Mike, the owner, sends out an email every week with that week's specials and a coupon off something. You can sign up at the website green vegetarian cuisine - San Antonio's Only Vegetarian or drop your business card in the bowl on the counter.

We went to this Lebanese restaurant yesterday called Aladdin's Eatery on 1604 close to Stone Oak in a strip called La Arcata. It is so flavorful!! The menu has a HUGE selection of healthy and vegetarian choices. I tried the vegetarian sampler. It was delicious! Try the Falaffels...they are amazing. And the great thing is that it is inexpensive. The pitas are between 5 and 6 dollars. Aladdins Eatery

Note: I am not trying to imply that to be healthy you have to be a vegetarian.

Someone asked previously about Green's food, so I'm posting this week's specials to give you an idea of what they serve.

SPECIALS
Week of April 12th, 2008
  • Monday: Soup - Garbanzo bean; Entrée - Carne guisada plate; Vegetable - Pasta salad
  • Tuesday: Soup - Tortilla; Entrée - Popcorn tofu poboy; Vegetable - Greek salad
  • Wednesday: Soup - Minestrone; Entrée - Falafel burger; Vegetable - Mushroom cobbler
  • Thursday: Soup - Turkey noodle; Entrée - Turkey & dressing; Vegetable - Green beans
  • Friday: Soup - Pinto bean; Entrée - Chopped bbq; Vegetable - Green apple coleslaw

My editorial commentary: LOVE the falafel, LOVE the green apple coleslaw. Since I'm not a fan of faux meat (making soy/wheat into something that approximates meat), I would rather just have the actual vegetables as they are... LOTS of options at Green.

I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to update that Gini's closed sometime between this post in July and the end of '07.

Two of my favorite salad bars in town are at chains with multiple locations: Souper Salad and Jason's Deli. One can put together a terrific salad that is both tasty and healthy at either place.

Jason's Deli has a salad bar? I've always meant to go in there, but still haven't. That will be an incentive to go, especially when I get a salad craving

My fave thing at green is the veggie burger. Its awesome.

That's too bad about Gini's.

Another good place to try though is Texas Farm to Table at Pearl Brewery.

Jason's has a really nice salad bar. The sandwiches are pretty good, too. Well, really good, actually. I've never had anything bad there, we just don't go there very often and I don't know why. I think it's their waiting in line/setup that turns us off.
