My husband and I just recently retired. We are considering a move to SA from Tampa. We would like to purchase a mid century modern / contempory home in SA - under $300K. Does anyone have any suggestions - neighborhoods close to down town, that would meet this criteria? Any information would be much appreciated.

The 78201 zip has a lot of midcentury modern homes so you can start there. It's not right downtown but I can get to the parking lot by the Alamo in 15 minutes, give or take, so it's pretty close when driving. It's also convenient to pretty much everything unless you want to drive to the exurbs.

Homes in this zip code can be wonderful or they can need work. It's a very established, middle class area. Parts of the area code are lovely (like the part I live in); others are a bit rundown. But you know...the mayor of San Antonio lives in this neighborhood/zip code in his own MCM home.

Alamo Heights also has a lot of MCM homes and it's closer to downtown but it might not fit in your budget.

Others will chime in here before long, I'm sure. We have several MCM afficianados on the board, myself included. We purchased a home a year ago. It was built in 1959 and retains the original hardwood floors, tons of built-ins, a phone nook (yay!), and vintage tilework in both baths. It's a 3/2 and 1842 square feet on a nice sized lot. We paid $139,000 for it.

Thank you so much for the information. Your house sounds really neat. I just checked out 78201 - there are some really nice houses in this zip. I plan on visiting my daughter in SA over mothers day weekend - and plan to drive the area. She relocated to SA a couple of years ago, and bought a house in Terrill Hills last year - she works down town, so it works really well for her. I would love to buy in TH's, however, the MCM homes are too pricey for what you seem to get. I guess its location, location...

Yes, it's definitely all about location, as it is anywhere. I hope you enjoy your visit next month and good luck on the home search. If you need a Realtor let me know - ours was wonderful and specializes in this area. I can message you her information!
