I am currently living in chicago suburbs and thinking of moving here. I am not happy with the cold weather here and would like a "fresh start" (tired of chicago life). I am in my late thirties but younger at heart. (Like to go out, single, no kids). I am a special education teacher and am planning on going to the teacher job fair on the 29th. I would like some recommendations on where to live (apartment), good pizza(?!) restaurants, places to visit, etc. School to work at? Any input is appreciated! TIA

Any place that will hire you...seriously...districts across the state are facing unprecedented budget cuts and shortfalls. Districts are cutting staff, including teachers. I'm not sure what job fair you are referring to...I was under the impression that most districts have hiring freezes in effect. Sorry to be so negative ...

You totally speak the truth. Going to the job fair is a start, but that is really not the way you're going to get hired with the state of the state of Texas right now. Check into some smaller areas surrounding the city as well and don't move from Chicago until you have a job here (or you have someone supporting you).

I thought I saw SAISD was taking place at a job fair, off a general job fair that my hubby brought home.

Agreed with what the other responses are, there are too many teachers that are displaced that districts are having to find spots for so they won't need or even be able to look outside of the district.

you wont be happy here either. dbag rick perry is slashing our education budget. as someone who loathes and hates kids, denying them an education is the worst thing you can do to balance the budget.

few friends/inlaws are getting out of teaching and retiring after next year. youre seriously facing a major uphill battle going for a teacher job in this city. honest advice: go back to school and get into another field.

That's good advice. I think one of the worst things a person can do is get a generalist degree that can only be applied to education unless they're preparing to go to graduate school and go into administration. Get a degree in mathematics, a specific science subject, economics, government, political science, etc. If teaching doesn't work out, then one can easily go back and get a graduate degree in one of these subjects. All of them are in high demand in the private sector, public sector, or both.

You know what's starting to become highly in demand? Behavioral analysis. Behavioral analysts are most in demand for working with people with autism.

By all means, attend the job fair, but please be aware of the situation.

Yes, all the school districts are trimming their budgets; but if you have qualifications they need you might get hired. I wouldn't recommend moving here until you have a job though, unless you are open to other lines of work. But schools all over the nation are cutting back, so this is not unique to SA. In fact, while suffering somewhat from the downsliding economy, San Antonio is still faring much better than most places!

The odd/funny thing is that I was going to post a link to NISD, but when I go to http://www.nisd.net/hr/jobs/]their job page, it's blank!

Cheers! M2

Thanks again. I do have good qualifications-Special Education, Early Childhood Special Education, Elementary Education, and I have plenty of experience in all areas. I am tenured where I'm at now but I know tenure will not mean much pretty soon. I just am ready for a change. I'm just ready to leave where I'm teaching now and I'm tired of the cold weather here in Chicago. I may just go because it really can't hurt to do so since I'm planning on visiting there anyways, it was just a coincidence that the job fair was at the same time.
