Is there a coffeehouse or bakery on the Riverwalk? Like a Cafe du Monde/La Madeleine type of place?

There is a Starbucks and a McDonalds. I don't know about any other specific places except the hotels have coffee and snacks in the afternoon.

Starbucks is next to the Hard Rock. There is a McDs downtown, but not on the riverwalk.

Yes our downtown is pathetic.
Sip is on the corner of Houston and St. Marys...about a block off the river....that is probably what you are looking for.

There is an Einstein Bros right inside the Hyatt. They make great bagel sandwiches, have coffee, some fruit and pastries.... Good place to go. Nothing fancy, and no outdoor seating, but I guess it depends on if you want pastries and coffee, or ambiance.

The new Starbucks opens this weekend... across from Sip (old Davenports location). The old location will become "BarRio" serving TexMex and drinks.

Not on the Riverwalk proper, but the Gunter Hotel on Houston has coffee and sweets, plus a streetside patio area for nicer days. I don't order "fancy" coffees, but I would assume most Riverwalk restauraunts serve cap/expresso these days.
