Not normally a heavy poster here but I spotted this today and just had to show someone.

I was reading a news article on MySa.com and wanted to understand the exact location for where a crime ocurred so I entered it into Google maps. When I zoomed out a few times I saw this (just south of Balcones Heights):

hey now HEY NOW.

... just because you're right doesn't mean you have to remind us

but really, haha, i remember seeing that on gmaps before as well and thought it was the funniest thing ever. why would anyone want to name a neighborhood "third world?" (not being sarcastic, genuinely wondering how a neighborhood got that name)

Wow... I just googled, and all I can find are generic information sites.

I would have expected a bunch of forum posts, Yahoo questions, etc of people asking why it's named that. I guess people are just not curious about the world around them, to the point that they don't wonder why a neighborhood is named "third world".

the thing is though, google maps is the only place i've ever seen it mentioned (no other maps i've noticed anyway, though it does show up on some real estate listings). not that i've driven through the area extensively, but i've never seen a "welcome to third world" like one would see "wood oak" or "eagle forest" subdivisions. i wonder if it's an archaic reference, and an unofficial or informal title for the area/neighborhood (like "tenderloin" for san francisco.)

Yea, there is already a thread of that in this forum. I believe it was brought up by El Nina about a year ago or so.
