My family and I are soon moving to San Antonio, so can anyone tell me what areas of the city are good/bad to look in? I might add that I know virtually nothing about the city at this moment.

I have small children, and I want to make sure I don't move into seedy or crime-ridden areas. We home-school, so schools aren't a factor right now, but it would be nice to be in an area where we don't have to worry about our children being outdoors. We'll be renting to start out with, but we'll be looking for a home I'm sure within a year or two. Probably in the $150k-ish range. Thanks.

What area are you going to be working? What do you like city or country, downtown or suburbia? Any area of the city has a good side and a bad side. Any area of the city has some crime, some more than others. Your asking a very broad question and it would be better to narrow down by choices what you are looking for. kind of house, working area, commuting desires.
Read the sticky at the top of the forum and it will give you an overview of the area.

It really depends on where you are working, or going to school or both.
Mostly because traffic can be a nightmare unless you are on an off schedule. As a very broad generalization the northside is good , southside not so much but is improving. But others will tell you there is nothing wrong with southside. Like ShaneSA said it depends more on the specific neighborhood than on the general side N,S,E,W of town.

Most everything north of 1604 between 281 and I-10 or near that general area are the newer and nicer sub divisions. However, there are nice neighborhoods in other areas of the city as well.

Schertz is a decent area to live in; however, it depends to some degree
where work will be and how long a commute you are willing to live with.

There are some Pulte homes going up just off Schertz parkway that I find quite nice... everything on one floor with a garage.

I agree with them all, I moved here not to long ago and im a fan of the northwest side more than NE, not all the south is bad but the way it is now i'd rather visit than to live. As far as renting we went on one of those apartment review websites to help find an apt and it was very helpful!

Where are there "safe" areas for a 20-something female to live? May need to take bus service to work.

Where will you work? What is your budget? There are plenty of nice and safe areas in the city to live in.

People have mentioned here areas in Downtown and around, like Alamo Heights, but if you will be working in a different area, you may not find easy public transportation

I'd say find a place as close to work as possible.

Within walking distance would be ideal... with a short bus
ride the next best.

But, if you work in a bad area then the above may not apply.
