My family and I are soon moving to San Antonio, so can anyone tell me what areas of the city are good/bad to look in? I might add that I know virtually nothing about the city at this moment.

What area are you going to be working? What do you like city or country, downtown or suburbia? Any area of the city has a good side and a bad side. Any area of the city has some crime, some more than others. Your asking a very broad question and it would be better to narrow down by choices what you are looking for. kind of house, working area, commuting desires.

Most everything north of 1604 between 281 and I-10 or near that general area are the newer and nicer sub divisions. However, there are nice neighborhoods in other areas of the city as well.

Schertz is a decent area to live in; however, it depends to some degree
where work will be and how long a commute you are willing to live with.
There are some Pulte homes going up just off Schertz parkway that I find quite nice... everything on one floor with a garage.

I agree with them all, I moved here not to long ago and im a fan of the northwest side more than NE, not all the south is bad but the way it is now i'd rather visit than to live. As far as renting we went on one of those apartment review websites to help find an apt and it was very helpful!

Where will you work? What is your budget? There are plenty of nice and safe areas in the city to live in.
People have mentioned here areas in Downtown and around, like Alamo Heights, but if you will be working in a different area, you may not find easy public transportation

I'd say find a place as close to work as possible.
Within walking distance would be ideal... with a short bus
ride the next best.
But, if you work in a bad area then the above may not apply.
