I did try Little Jamaica a couple of months ago. Although it's not like back home in Rochester, NY, it was decent. I picked up the brown-stew chicken and mango chicken dinners with beef & chicken patties. I didn't care for the rice though (parboiled, I believe). I would have used regular rice but washed very well---no gummy rice :>(.

My step-father is from Kingston, JA and he raised me so I grew up eating this delicious food. I just could not eat cow foot.

@annken...what Caribbean spot did you go to in Rochester, NY? I spent a little time up that way, and used to get jerk chicken dinners and patties out of this little corner store on Gennessee St. Trying to recall if there were any other spots I'd been during my stay there.

The winters there were brutal, but the rest of the year was pretty nice. I miss the parks in the area, great fishing weather.

@Dreadlockd: There's a store on Genesee & Brooks Ave. I have been in there but I haven't eaten there. My stepbrother Sam also had a caribbean grocery store for years on Genesee St & Sawyer until recently. You got the dinners in the back of the store & patties at the register in the front. I also got my hard-dough bread & other products there too. My brother Damo has the music store next door still. When I went back for visit a couple months ago, Sam closed the store & will be opening a restaurant soon further down Genesee St, which he was working on. I went inside & they just laid the tile down. I also went to L&J's restaurant on Thurston & another spot on the east side but can't remember the name. As a side note, I also like Puerto Rican & Dominican food so I try to get my fix while I'm there too.

The winters are VERY brutal---that's all I've know until 2 yrs ago. I miss the things you mentioned above along with the festivals.

mmmh, someone else knows what hard dough bread is..

We'd be in trouble if I could find that around here. Usually have my wife pick some up around Miami when she visits her grandma.

Went to Calypso today.. was excellent.

It's not so much a sit down restaurant, you walk up and order.. very nice seating area though.

The food was AWESOME... They had some amazing Jerk Chicken, very spicy and hot. Also got a jerk pork torta, that was great too. Their potato wedges are out of this world. I will definitely be back.

It seemed mostly Jamaican.. I did see a cuban sandwich on the menu.

Prices were pretty reasonable. Half chicken with 2 sides, a torta with two sides and another side of Pineapple Coconut Rice was about 20 dollars.

I can't recall the cross street...this was back around 2004...2005. That sounds very familiar, because I used to go next door to get my reggae mix tapes and nag champa incense when they had them in stock. I'm guessing that may be the same spot. Congrats to your cousin on his restaurant.

I miss beef patties & coco bread..
