Any bars in S.A. that have mixologist bartenders. Like Peche in Austin or Anvil in Houston? We'll be in town Saturday and want to see what S.A. has to offer as far as good bartenders go.

Quick response. . . .

I've been to both Peche and Anvil, and I prefer what SA has to offer. Although others will surely disagree. . . .

Here's my list:

Bohannon's (downtown, classic, a little conservative and "adult," but some great drinks--and an insane selection of liquors);

Mon Ami (in Alamo Heights and behind a Thai restaurant, really cute, with my favorite SA bartender who really knows his stuff);

The Esquire (downtown, vintage, up and coming, but definitely with some hits and misses);

Ocho (the old "Havana Bar", beautiful building, a small but interesting selection--I'd suggest the Montserrat [I believe]);

The Green Lantern (I've never been there as it's up north in suburban Stone Oak, but I've heard some good things).

Of all of these, I'd definitely say that Olaf at Mon Ami makes the city's best drinks. Go early so you get a chance to sit at the bar and talk to him--he's a great guy. (For coolest ambiance, though, it'd be hard to beat The Esquire, although Ocho does its own interesting thing.)

The Esquire and Mon Ami fit the billing. Many of the others listed are just bars with nice drink lists.

Jeret Pena, head bartender/manager at The Esquire fits the bill--some of the others don't. (I had the worst mint julep of my life there--it was like sprite mixed with low-class bourbon. How can you screw up a mint julep? [Granted, it's not one of their specialties, but if you order one at Mon Ami, Olaf will simply not make it unless he has a pewter glass on hand as well as the freshest mint.])

I've definitely had some fine drinks at Bonahan's.

If I recall correctly, there is a bar located in a "hidden" area at Mon Thai Bistro in Alamo Heights that has mixologists
