From what I understand, the post office does NOT receive taxpayer dollars for mail delivery.

Every time the postal service wants to reduce days or increase the price of a stamp, it seems they are denied. Yes, I know the postal service has a monopoly on "1st class" mail, but how would FedEx or UPS survive if they were told what rates they could charge? Would FedEx or UPS agree to serve all rural addresses for the same price? I just don't think it is just as simple as turning over the mail to a pure private entity.

How much mail do you guys get??

Personally for me, I do all my bills online. The only mail I get is junk mail and an occasional Netflix dvd.
I do feel sorry for the people who may lose their jobs; I remember in th eold days the post office was the place to work for because it was a stable field of work with great retirement benefits..
In this case, progress sux... Thanks to the web and Email...

A fair amount, I buy a lot through mail order from overseas locations and USPS is the best way to go with that.

Delivery five times a week isn't that demanding, it's not like the old days when mail was brought to every individual home. I believe the vast majority of people get their mail through "community" boxes where one location serves 10-15 recipients.

Still, if you think USPS rates are expensive, compare them to the UK Royal Mail! Remember that £1 = $1.64, so a letter up to 20g (0.7 oz) costs $1.12!

I'd be bummed to see the downtown one close, but at the same time, it's pretty underutilized. Now that could be due to lousy hours and difficult access, but I did like being able to walk to it. I can walk to the one on S. Alamo, though it's not as nice.

The Hackberry one has been on the chopping block for awhile.

My 5 yr old would be rather disappointed not to get mail 6 days a week, as it's now her favourite thing - to go check the mail. We get "real" mail probably 3-4 days a week tho. Mostly cards, and overseas stuff comes via USPS.

I haven't seen any mention of how many people will lose their jobs?
