Wonder who it was that failed to look up the drug they're referring to or to check with a physician about it. They are calling Xanax a "prescription painkiller". It is a benzodiazepine that is used for anxiety disorder and panic disorder...NOT for pain!

Don't blame the journalists... from what I've read, that characterization of Xanax as a "painkiller" was critical to the guard's defense. He was said to be taking the Xanax from prisoners for his chronic back pain.

I don't doubt what you've posted here, though. In the past, I've usually seen it described as a "tranquilizer."
