Question I need help quick question on where to live in SA near nw Between Potranco and Hwy 90

We need to know quick I am in SA visting my husband we are staying here on Lackland we are military but he may be getting out and working at the Texas Research Park and we need to find a home before school starts. We have looked at many areas but don't know about crime and schools and good areas we are use to living in a close community so crime is a factor. We found houses in NW between Potranco and hwy 90 and near Westover Hills(Creekside Sudvision) we would like to know about Mesacreek and Amberwood KB and Fieldstone near hwy 90 and Kriewald Rd. We have heard mixed reviews of course we want reasonable prices but also a decent place to live with good schools. We are looking at private and public schools if anyone know of good schools this will be helpful also.

Those areas are just inside the Northside Independent School District...Kriewald Road is the southern boundary of NISD...Pue Rd is the western boundary in those areas. Michaels or Fisher Elementary, Rayburn Middle School and John Jay High School serves those areas you mentioned.

pretty much anything NW of the Potranco/1604 intersection is going to be more expensive, but will, for the most part, be more safe. There are a few bad apples that somehow make their way through anything, but that whole area is generally considered a good side of town.
Please note I didn't say the only good side of town, just a good side.. My personal opinion is the closer to 90 you go the less the word safe becomes applicable.. you also need to look at the middle and high schools in the area if you'll be there long enough. Stevens, Taft and Warren are all good high schools. I personally am happy neither of my kids went to Jay... one was class of 05 Taft and the other was 07 Stevens. One kid had to go to Zachary middle school for a few months and that was the only time I've ever gone into a school and had some words with a principal. I definitely did not like the Zachary experience one bit and luckily he was moved to Jordan.

I think you said in a previous post that you had a real estate agent helping you? Have him/her check for listings in the Westcreek area. It's truly hard to beat for value, amenities, and proximity to schools. The longer I live in this area, the more I wish we would have bought over there.

I don't know anything about the other two, but please take a drive to Jay and form your own opinion.. I personally chose the location I moved to just so my kids would not have to go to Jay..

This is my personal opinion and I'm not trying to be offensive.

BTW, I live in Westcreek and I like it. There's no way I would claim it's the best neighborhood in SA or anyting like that, but it's fairly quiet, there's very little drama and the largest amount of police action is from the sheriff's deputy that patrols the area and LOVES pulling people over.... definitely don't roll through stop signs there, he got my wife twice
there are also a large amount of volunteer firefighters there, so you will here sirens, but they're the good kind. well, good that someone is going to fight a fire, not good that there is a fire to be fought..

As a licensed Realtor, I can't make comments on whether a school is "good, bad, or indifferent" (possible violation of Federal Fair Housing rules), but I can refer you to websites like www.greatschools.net where you can find alot of information. Also, see rd2007's most recent post. He addressed it.

one other thing my wife and I were talking about today. I personally think it's a good thing to stretch a little on affordability when it comes to buying a house. NOT buying more than you can afford, but going towards the higher end. I wish we would've stretched the pennies to buy this Ryland house we looked at in Westover Hills. At the time it was about $20K more than we wanted to spend, but we could've afforded it with some good budgeting and the value of the house has basically doubled in five years.

again that's only my personal opinion

More costly, but a much better area. Homes in Redbird Ranch start in the 120's. It will cost you in the high 120's to 130's to get a house in Westcreek.
