Does anyone know of a local store that carries a good selection of wooden chess sets? I'm not looking for a themed set, just standard Staunton pieces in wood with a board in mahogany or rosewood. This will be my daughter's first non-toy set so I'm not looking for the high end ones, but I'd still like something that would last a long time. I'm finding what I'm looking for online for about $150, but I prefer to get a feel for the pieces at a local store.

You could prolly try the farmer's market close to downtown. They got lots of wooden ones that are standard where you don't confuse bishops for kings for pawns. Or...United States Chess Federation has some nice ones that not too expensive. I used to be a member and you could put yourself on their catalog mailing list.

May not be as nice as you're looking for but I've seen chess sets at World Market that are enclosed in a wooden box (the board) they're really cool.
