Looking at an older used car.

Has anyone ever had a used car inspected by one of those companies that supposedly will protect you from buying a lemon?

What was your experience?

I would go to any certified car mechanic and let check the car visual and computerized.
Better pay for the check than be sorry.

Agreed - take it to a local mechanic that you already use and trust......

What is the vehicle?

There are a lot of car related forums on the internet... some are general
while others are vehicle specific.

There may be a forum where you can find out the specifics to look for
with that specific vehicle given its age.

I can tell you the hot spots on the Chrysler/Dodge Neon's.
