Hey guys and gals, have any of you utilized the eastern toll road around Austin to blow by there, headed toward Waco and DFW? I'll need to drive up that way a few times this year, and am wondering if it's a good idea to take that bypass, or just trudge down IH-35. I will probably get a TxTag soon, just for convenience of using that road and occasionally Beltway 8 in Houston. How expensive is the Austin bypass, and does it really buy you time?

I hear it is a good deal even though it is expensive. I don't know the cost, but depending on when you travel people who have taken it told me they don't mind the cost. I will be interested to find out the real cost also.

If it isn't prime time rush hour, saves you about 15 minutes from what I'm told.

Yeah - an' ONE accident on 35 will make ya WISH you were on it. It IS ridiculous in cost IMO, but I use it any time I'm goin' that way.

You should probably take my advice as I have driven 300k+ miles on I-35 in last 3 years or so ( living in SA going to Austin everyday for a year in 2006, then started going to Tulsa every week for a year, and now going to Dallas every week for > a year now ... I know ... but family and kids did not want to move from SA )

IMHO it is NOT worth driving 30 extra miles + paying toll if you are not going to go through Austin b/w the hours of 7:30 - 9:30 in the morning and 4:30 - 6:30 in the afternoon. I have seen people getting ahead of me even during these times when I took Toll Road

For those with a GPS I would never recommend Toll no matter what since you can always get out to pass traffic without getting lost and trust me doing this rarely adds 20 minutes to your time plus you'll save miles and money ... in my case doing this never added 20 minutes (but you can say I am exceptional driver )

I have taken it several times going up to Ft. Worth. All I can say is make sure you go to the bathroom before you get on it and get gas. There is nothing out there. I like it b/c it is a peaceful drive w/o the craziness of 35. 35 always slows down right when you hit Riverside. It never fails.

You can also take 281N to 290 if you feel like it. Also a very scenic drive.

You can also go on I 10 to Lockhart and take 183 all the way to north Austin and avoid the downtown traffic. That's my usual route (depending on the time of day I have to go thru Austin.) Time wise it's probably the same but at least your car isn't sitting in traffic.

I believe is $12 to bypass Austin.

I hate tolls, and I think is funny that people say "it helps improve things"
Funny, since I-130 looks like you are driving through the middle of a desert and there's still 1 billion people driving on I-35 through Austin.

If I-130 was the solution... what the h... was the problem?
