TJ is sort of like a small town grocery store from the 1970s. Hard to explain. I also like the type of people that shop there. Also, no BS uber-processed foods that you get from big stores like HEB, Target, Walmart, etc...just simple stuff that tastes real good. A lot of the higher quality ingredients that I need seem to be sold there like canned fresh tomatoes without the citrus acid (gives pasta that sour taste), steel cut frozen oatmeal, real oatmeal cookies, etc. It's not a store that will blow you away, but the prices are low like HEB but with better quality food and ingredients. People LOVE working there--and that makes a huge difference for the shopper. Hope that helps.

Trader Joe's doesn't smell bad. You're thinking of Culebra Meat Market.

I think we should all meet up and you guys can cook me a steak from each store and I'll tell you which is best after several weekends of taste testing and deliberations.

I have a better idea.

I cook my steaks from whatever store I choose at home and you cook your steaks from whatever store you choose at your home. Having choices is wonderful.

Brilliant idea because no way in hell am I even eating a bag of Lay's potato chips if it was once on the shelf at a Culebra Meat Market. You couldn't pay me to eat a piece of meat from there.

I am SO not looking to start something with this statement, but I can remember years ago after reading on CDF how great Culebra Meat Market was stopping in one day thinking I could skip Dzuks drive to Castroville or Bolners down I-37 area....walked in and it was so very filthy I turned right around and walked out after looking at the "fresh" meat counter.

I have lived in 3rd world countries a NUMBER of years, and never was as concerned as I was when I saw that place.

Again, quite a while back....and have not been back, so have no idea if things have improved.
