EVERYTHING!!! Their spices, their soaps are WONDERFUL and VERY cheap, their cookies and "cranberry oatmeal "dunkers" are WONDERFUL with coffee in the morning! Their sauces and butters (almond, different nuts, pumpkin and fruits...) and all great and their MUSTARDS!!! Aioli Garlic Mustard is WONDERFUL You can take a LITTLE TJ and make something VERY special. Example, our grandchildren LOVE fresh cresscent rolls with breakfast...I spread a little of the pumpkin butter before I roll the regular Pillsbury triangles up and they are SOOOOOO delicious!!! I ADORE their South African Smoke blend seasonings....just a little in anything and the taste becomes more exotic and leaving you trying to put your finger on what it is that you like so much!
If I had to single out ONE item that I could NOT live without, it would be their spicy corn salsa relish....to die for! $1.99!!!!!! They also are the home of AWESOME and very cheap Balsamic Vinegar and two buck chuck!!!! COME ON TRADER JOES!!! IT IS TIME!!!!

I lived in Germany, both east and west, for several years. I was never particularly impressed with Aldi or Lidl either. Some of the Aldi stores only have frozen, packaged meat. I found the bigger supermarkets much better in terms of selection. One of my German friends commented that Aldi stores are the ones people go to when the store is close to where they live and they don't have a car.

As far as the shopping carts and charging for bags, this is common in all of the German grocery stores. You make a deposit on the cart and get it back when you put the cart back in its place. You learn to take bags with you to the grocery store so you won't have to pay extra for bags. And you mostly do your own bagging.
