I bought this one and live in the medical center area:

Buy.com - RCA ANT751 Outdoor Antenna Optimized for Digital Reception

I get all the CBS/ABC/NBC/FOX stuff, couple of weather stations. PBS has 3 English channels, 1 Spanish. Seems like 3 or 4 religious stations along with Ion and My35. I also get CoolTV which is like MTV 25 years ago. Univision and Telemundo look amazing.

NFL in HD is glorious on FOX, so is bikini dance party HD on Univision (which seems to air in one form or another almost continuously).

I got rid of cable a while ago and just use netlix on my xbox now. However, i just bough a new HDTV that has a built in tuner so I may go buy an antenna to see if i can pick up some free local channels. There is no way i am going back to cable thats for sure.....Hope i can pick up some channels (i live 3 miles outside of 1604 on Potranco)

With Time Warner anyways, if your tv has a QAM tuner you can get most, if not all, of the OTA channels in HD. However, you need to have basic cable or an internet connection going to your place. In our case, we cut the cable because we rarely watched it. We kept our internet though, and because we have the QAM tuner we can get the channels we watch most without an antenna. We also get History Channel. Not sure why it comes through, but it does.

I suppose this could change in time, but it has worked great for the past 3 years. If TW ever decides to lock them down then we'll fall back to an antenna. Although I did read somewhere that Federal law requires they provide the local broadcast channels unscrambled. Something to do with franchise agreements I think. It's not something the cable company is going to advertise of course.

+1, just installed the $12 antenna from Radio Shack and I pickup NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, KSAT, weather channel, and a bunch of spanish stations (which aren't for me, but my fiancee loves them). I should also add that this is an indoor antenna on the 1st floor of a 3 story complex.

Honestly, it's enough to keep me happy since I don't watch much TV, and the HD reception is better than what I rememer with TWC. Unfortunately, it looks like they'll still get my internet service though :/

ABC was the only one giving me problems at first, but I just fiddled with the antenna a bit, and now everything is fine
