Question Avoid Bastrop: Alternate route from College Station to San Antonio

Can someone tell me an alternate route that wouldn't be too out of the way to drive from College Station to San Antonio without going through Bastrop, TX where all the fires are?

Here are a couple of options with main roads:
  • Take SR 21 south to I-290, go west to Austin, then south on I-35
  • Go south on SR77 to I-10, then west on I-10 to San Antonio.

We have a cabin in Giddings, and went I-35 to I-290, then east to Giddings on Labor Day. Our original route goes right through Bastrop.

I would take the 290 route, unless you are hitting Austin at rush hour. The I10 way takes forever.
