Default Flooding yesterday on Lackland AFB

IF you think that you had it bad yesterday, check out this parking lot on the Medina Annex of Lackland AFB.

As you look at the photos, understand that from what it says here, the first page to page 1/2 are about 16 hours AFTER the rains finally quit (meaning today) the really deep stuff is yesterday afternoon and evening.

I have lived here a LONG time and have never seen anything like this.

Wow! I worked at MRSOC (now NSA/CSS Texas) from 2001-2006 and never saw it that bad, LUCKILY. Most of those pictures are from the lower parking lot there and it's a known problem. I don't know why they don't do something to fix it, it obviously needs it!!
thanks for sharing those, I'm going to show them to some coworkers that also used to work there.

BTW, seems Lackland really screwed up yesterday. I left a little early yesterday, but they never sent people home. Usually they'll do it when the weather is bad and not even close to as bad as it was yesterday. The really stupid part was they actually closed the base for a while, so people had to drive through even worse road conditions and traffic. At a little before 2:00 Military was a river and under 90 was quickly turning into a lake. I luckily beat the absolute worst of it, but it was pretty nasty and nasty enough to kick in my traction control about 100 times..
People that left after me took 1-2 to get home. It was mostly from running into closed roads and getting stuck on a closed Lackland.

Tell me about it. Both hubby and I work on Lackland (he at AIA, me at WHMC) and they actually LOCKED US IN THE BUILDING as well as closed the gates in and out of the base.

Now lets see, flooding, only going to get worse, but they did not release us to get home before it was really bad, but kept us there way to long.

I would have gladly been charged leave to get home to our kid and be settled in for the night, but it took me 1 1/2 hours to get from WHMC to Westcreek (and that was only because I knew of a back way to go, or I would have been really messed up by the time they let us go.

I work at AIA too (AFISRA just doesn't sound the same..) and can feel your pain. They let us go early a few weeks ago when it was raining pretty bad and that day was nowhere near as bad as yesterday.
One of my coworkers also lives in Westcreek and he probably drove about 100 miles to get home.. his first mistake was going south to try and avoid the traffic. it went seriously downhill from there and ended with him being locked on the training side of Lackland

BTW, which part of AIA does your husband work in? I'm a part of the 690th, like the red headed stepchildren pretty much

thanks again for those pictures, they're amazing

Thanks for the pics, Paka.
I somehow managed to get off of Lackland Training and was headed back to Medina annex when they closed the bases. Thank goodness I didn't get to go back to work, I would have been right there in Annex Lake.
Talked to quite a few co-workers today. From the time the announcement was made that the lot was flooding until folks could get out there to the cars the water rose almost 2ft. Many just stood and watched helplessly as thier cars started floating.
Apparently we get so few "floods" here that the cost of fixing the problem isn't worth the expense. I'm not looking forward to what Dean will bring!

Thanks for the pics. I was born at Lackland a very long time... mmmm, well, back when the hospital was new. Might have been the first AF brat born at Lackland. Never saw a civilian Doc before I was twenty-one. Dad was one of the original AF guys after WWII. We shipped out a few years later.

God bless all of you for doing what you do, taking the lives you have. I'm thankful for the military every day... every day.

Funny, I was just getting ready to post the same link. DH sent it home to me...just CRAZY! I didn't go to work yesterday because I had several appointments (I work at Fort Sam). I know he said he left at about 2:00 yesterday (he too works at AIA), but didn't get home until about 5:00. He helped a few people whose cars got stranded by grabbing a rope and just pulling them out with our SUV.

I grew up on the street right behind the field in front of the annex off of Medina Base Rd. Our house is the first one on the corner with the big lot with lots of trees. My dad is still there and he was telling me last night how bad it was there. He was going to go help out, but he had to go to work.

I do work at NSA Texas and was amazed that we were not informed about the flooding in our parking lot. At about 2pm, me and a few coworkers walked out there to the parking lot just to see how it looks because our parking lot has been known to flood. We were not expecting to see what we saw. We figured the parking lot would have some flooding, especially the lower part closest to the entry control point gate, but we didn't expect to see a river and a lake. We rushed back to the office and informed our boss and thankfully he released us. I left about 220pm and I was parked in the higher parts of the lot and water was half way up the tires of my truck. I saw an Eclipse with water already up to its door handles. My boss waited it out and lost his car. I too agree that something needs to be done about the flooding in our parking lot. While it does flood often, it doesn't turn into a lake like it did yesterday, but what if this happens again? Yesterday was a crazy day I saw things I have never seen before!

I work in Bldg 2000. We did get an early release but unfortunately we didn't try to leave until we had reached a good stopping point on a project we were working on. By that time Everyone was restricted to the Bldg.

I thought that if you had personal property damaged by an act of nature on a military installation you could make a claim against the government? Might be worth looking into.

I hope those clowns swimming/neck deck in the water get a good ass chewing for being stupid! Even if the water isn't fast moving it will be extremely polluted.
