I know this thread is old but this information is dangerously misleading. The poster claims that UTSA is advancing in ranking when it is simply not true. All UTSA has done is move from a regional ranking (Regional Universities offer a full range of undergraduate programs and provide graduate education at the master’s level. However, they differ by offering few, if any, doctoral programs.) to a National ranking (National Universities offer a full range of undergraduate majors as well as master’s and doctoral degrees.) Tier 2 by US news means that UTSA is ranked in the bottom 25% of all national ranked universities, Therefore nothing to brag about. There are plenty of better nationally ranked colleges to attend in Texas. Rice, UT Austin, Texas A&M (college station), SMU, Baylor, TCU, UT Dallas, and Texas Tech are all ranked above tier two and are better universities than UTSA. All UTSA has been doing is trying really hard to become a research university. The university of Houston has already been granted the title of a Tier 1 research institute and the funds that were set aside by the state of Texas for the Tier 1 campaign are already being distributed to U of H. UT Dallas and Texas tech are the closest competitors and by the time all three of these universities reach eligibility to draw funding from this fund, they will either exhaust all the funding before UTSA is even eligible or more likely the Texas state legislature will be happy with their goal reached of creating more Tier one universities with U of H, UT Dallas, and Tech being named the new research universities. UTSA is an abysmal university and if they truly wanted to improve as a University they would raise their admission standards and focus on their abysmal graduation rate. I will admit that a big reason it is so low is that it does not take into account students transferring out (which I myself did after realizing I had been duped my 1st year). There are many great schools in this state that are worth going to and my advice to any student going to UTSA is to transfer into one of the better schools! UT Dallas is one of the BEST up and coming Universities period and i believe will somewhat rival Baylor/SMU in ten years. ............ a transfer student hating on UTSA. What is funny?? ............. you are the reason why the graduation rate is low right now.
i graduated in 5 years, holllllllaaaaa! lol who cares if you don't finish in 4 years, lots of factors in play for each individual.
As was pointed out above, it matters in the rankings. It also matters to legislators and university administrators looking to cut costs. That's why some schools are offering financial incentives to students who graduate on time. It's much cheaper for the school (and for the state) to get a student through the state institution in 4 years than to add more resources to support a larger student body.
The financial incentives are designed to convince you to care.
Of course i transferred! UTSA is a sub par university compared to any of the schools I listed in the previous post. I ended up going to SMU which is much MUCH better for Business majors than UTSA will ever be. UTSA's status as a commuter school for San Antonian's who want to finish their degree while working and for those who could not be accepted to another college is pretty much all it has going for itself. Why should I have graduated from an unranked college(which is at least AACSB accredited) when I could go to the 62nd nationally ranked university which has a business program (123 ranked by Forbes) top 20% versus UTSA's (603 out of 610!)Bottom 2%. Granted UTSA is a lot cheaper but your options from SMU are significantly greater than UTSA. I am not the reason the graduation rate is so low either. I may have contributed slightly but the problem is UTSA ideals of an ever expanding campus and low caliber student. I would like to know how continuing from UTSA would have given me any advantage over transferring to SMU.
And yes, there are better universities......but, most of those have been around for a century or more. I would HOPE and PRAY SMU was better ......... its ancient.

By the way.......... I know for a fact that many businesses look at your grades far more than where you went. People should concentrate on that more than anything IMHO.

Ha. That's pretty neat. I guess UTSA was one of only nine US universities to make the list, putting us in pretty good company (UC-Irvine, UC-Santa Cruz, and yes, UT-Dallas). Interesting.
Really, though, having a UTSA undergrad degree can open up a lot of possibilities. As someone wrote, good grades and good recommendation letters can make all the difference. I know UTSA BA's who've gotten into the top graduate programs in the world.
And, it really varies by department. Many of UTSA's departments are stellar or becoming so; others, not so much. UTSA offers advanced degrees in subjects that UT-Dallas (for example) doesn't even have. Many of the doctoral programs at UTSA aren't even a decade old, which means that when the first crop of grad students finish, the school will move up through the rankings better than it has. In addition, faculty workloads and expectations have shifted radically in the last decade, and faculty research expenditures and publications are increasing quickly. Coupled with tighter admissions standards, that, too, will help with the rankings.
Any sensible, careful student should do the research and find out whether UTSA will work for them. For many people, it's a great place. For others, different schools will be a better fit.

I just looked at that study's methodology, and an interesting fact came up. UTSA's relatively high ranking is due mainly to the "Citations" category, which measures the faculty's influence:
"In this indicator, we examine a university's research influence by capturing the number of times its published work is cited by scholars around the world."
UTSA has a "Citations" number of 70.3. UT-Dallas has 44.2. That's a big--and, quite frankly, surprising--gap.
It just goes to show you that if you do well, talk to your professors, and make a (good) impression, plenty of people at UTSA have the reputation to write a strong recommendation that will help you get to wherever you want to be, academically or professionally.
The University of Texas at San Antonio is wise beyond its years, according to new university rankings by the Times Higher Education.
UTSA was ranked No. 53 out of the top 100 universities around the world .....................
