Piggly Wiggly used to have quite a few locations in San Antonio. The Sprouts that is on Nacogdoches, just north of 410, was originally a Piggly Wiggly.

Waitz' was an independent store. There was also Pen Foods, at Callaghan & I10. The Pen foods store location became a Handy Andy, probably around 1990, then Sun Harvest, and now it is a Sprouts.

We also used to have Centeno's on Southcross and Commercial, Phar-Mor on 410 and McCullough. Phar-Mor was awesome!

Azteca was only here less than a decade ago on Southcross and Clark.

There used to be this other store in the 1980s on W.W. White, another on Goliad, surely there were more around town, where you had to bag your own groceries. What were they called? Maybe it started with an M?

I think I must be confusing Trader Joes with some other store, some one please remind me, about 15 years ago, we had HEB, Fiestas, Handy Andy, Albertsons, then there was another one, very similar to Handy Andys.
I posted that link awhile back in another thread discussing Wal-Mart starting to build those new neighborhood markets here in SA. Point is, I think HEB has a good supplier base and Wal-Mart wants to take from that also so there is no better place to start than here.

Here is the link to the thread: Wal Mart Neighborhood Market at Tezel and Guilbeau

Probably Magna-mart. There was one at San Pedro and McCarty (Where Family Leisure is now), and I think there was one at Eisenhauer & I35 (Where Goodwill is now). Magna-mart was here from about the mid-1970s until about 1980, IIRC.

Or maybe we had Magna-mart and Mega??? The one I am thinking of was in town from the mid to late '80s.

Maybe Magott's Grocery? Before my time...

There is a mysa blog page that lists quite a few grocery stores of the past here in SA.

There definitely was a Magna-mart. I remember visiting the one on San Pedro. It was sort of warehouse-style, and I remember you had to bag your own purchases, and they didn't have anyone to help customers with carry-out and loading. Sort of a no-frills type store.

I only shopped there that one time, because I didn't live near any of the locations, back when they operated here.
