Default Help finding the owner of a lost dog?

Saturday these two dogs were roaming around... and we let them in the back yard to see if they had ID. Of course no collars, and Sunday we took them to Petsmart and no microchips either. Sigh.

Given the recent discussion on "what would you do if you found a stray dog", what should I do???

I can't really keep them... we already have a dog and 3 cats and it's just too much for me financially and not realistic to add 2 more dogs. I don't want to just let them roam again - although today they did escape and for a second I thought it was out of my hands, but 15 minutes later they were scratching at the front door.

The SA Humane Society only takes strays by appt if they have room, and I couldn't get through on the phone today. I hate to call ACS and have them picked up & probably euthanized in 3 days. I have posted on Craigslist, our neighborhood email group, put up posters... and scoured all "lost dog" sites I can think of but nothing matches. Given where we live, outside city limits to the north, I'm guessing they were dumped like so many other strays up here.

SO - in this situation, what would you do? Give them to ACS or just let them go and discourage them from coming back to your house (how, I don't know). I'd like to find homes for them but I have to do something soon.

One is a black lab and one is a yorkie poo, cockapoo, some sort of little poo. Both are male and not neutered... the lab has an owie over one eye and the little one has evidence of tapeworm, but other than that they seem ok and they are SUPER friendly, get along great with my kids and dog... haven't tried to kill the cats yet...

Any suggestions or anyone want to take them off my hands?

You should be able to find a home for the smaller one pretty quick on craigslist. Post a picture, describe the personality a little bit, put your phone number in the ad for a quicker response if you're comfortable doing that.

Black labs are the hardest to rehome, usually, and taking one to the pound is a death sentence because the shelters are full of them. I'd still try finding him a home on CL...get a picture of him with that Lab grin if possible for the ad.

I definitely wouldn't take them to ACS; they really would get 3 days and that's it. But it sounds like those two had a home...

There are other no-kill shelters around. Animal Defense League really disappointed me the last time I went there; they have a relationship with ACS and it's not one through which animals go from ACS to the no-kill shelter so you may want to ask a lot of questions.

It would be a shame to have two friendly dogs killed. You might try the Helotes Humane Society or places like Boerne and other small towns. I've had pretty good luck with no-kill shelters outside SA.

You might try contacting a rescue group that was at Petsmart this past Saturday. They have a lot of dogs already, of course, but they were actually adopting many of them out. They are a Great Dane rescue group but they only had one GD there named Nathan and he now has a forever home. Until they realize just how HUGE that guy is. I sure hope it's forever......poor doggie.

They do take other breeds and mutts. But I have no insider info as to whether or not they will take your 2. They usually go to the shelters and save the ones that are ready to be euthanized.

Welcome to San Antonio Great Dane Rescue

Good luck. People suck.
(oh, not you.......thank you for taking care of them)

Lots of tail wags from my happy rescue mutts. And I'm happy too, of course.
