The aluminum can recycling station that was in the Midnight Rodeo parking lot on the corner of Thousand Oaks and Nacogdoches is gone, as I discovered this morning. Does anyone know if it moved somewhere nearby?

Is there a place to take aluminum cans in the northeast part of town?

There's a place on Houston just before Rigsby Rd. I past it the other day and saw a sign to buy aluminum. It's just before Rigsby on Houston. No idea of price or hours. I hope that helps.

As a kid, it was a Saturday morning ritual every few weeks/months to take our aluminum cans for some spare change at a recycling station on the Westside on Old Hwy 90. I'm not sure about other locations but I know business had decreased because of the recycling option tied with our trash collection. I believe there are recycling centers still open but the money return is not as great as before and drinking sodas from other types of containers didn't help to accumulate a good supply to take.

You know something, you're absolutely right. There were no plastic soft drink bottles like there are now. All sodas and beer came in aluminum cans starting about 1977 or so. Back then, they paid about 18 cents/lb. Of course, a 1977 dollar went a lot further than a 2011 one.

Also interesting in NE recycling, wish I would have known about the Midnight Rodeo location. I was talking about this with a friend today, I would save cans if I didn't have to drive to the sticks to cash them in. I remember 15-20 years ago there were metal trailers everywhere, even the automated "golden goat" machine. I do still see hobos collecting cans all the time, I wonder where they sell them. I need to start asking them perhaps.

there used to be a guy with a pick up truck that bought cans and other scrap metal on Randolph BLVD about 2 blocks up from the park and ride - anyone know if he still does? It was only a few days a week for a couple hours.

Other than that - there isn't anywhere on the NE side. Might be why I'm seeing so many cans not picked up as of late - no where to take them.
