The big premise behind all types of insurance is that you cannot predict future "catastrophic" events...such as an accident or a major health issue. So, if you are luck to never need major coverage, then yes, you may be better off with self insurance. But if you have a major event, then you can go very quickly into bankrupt or without means to get the care you need.

I have searched and searched for a provider that offers a "Catastrophic" policy...I have found none.
Meanwhile I was paying nearly a grand a month for insurance which had a high deductible. In the end, I paid everything. Instead, I will now save the grand each month and let it accumulate. Short of Cancer, I this should result in an huge excess.
