We drove 281 from I-20 to 290 over Thanksgiving. Traffic was pretty steady, and we assumed a lot of that was due to people avoiding I35.

We like to eat at Bluebonnet Cafe in Marble Falls and Koffee Kup in Hico (both of which have awesome pies!), and at Ronnie's BBQ in Johnson City. I like to stop and shop at Pottery Ranch in Marble Falls.

Is 281 still a good alternative to I-35, to drive to Dallas? Is the scenery enough to warrant leaving in the daylight? I have the option of leaving around 1:00 pm or after work, around 6:00 pm. If it's a nice drive, I have no problem leaving at lunchtime, even if it puts me arriving in Dallas during rush hour. I really don't want to go I35 if there is an alternate route.

It is WAY better than 35.

Yukon, I much prefer 281 to I-35. It's scenic, the traffic once you're north of Blanco is minimal, and there are plenty of small towns in which you can take a break, fuel up you and/or your conveyance, and the two-lane stretches are becoming fewer and fewer. It's far more relaxing than the clown driving on I-35.

I can't believe I'm reading something written by 24-year-old me. And I'd STILL take 281!
