They do lay off military, the USAF just had a RIF for officers and over 440 were selected to involuntarily separate by 1 March of next year. If the so-called "Congressional Super Committee" fails to agree on at least $1.2 trillion in cuts to the nation's debt before Thanksgiving, and the Budget Control Act's sequester is enacted, the latter will automatically slash the Pentagon's budget up to $1 trillion over the next 10 years, about twice as much as the legislation already has taken from defense accounts over that span.

The does equate to a lot of developmental and modernization programs being cut, but a lot will occur in the personnel sector as well. Cuts will affect active duty, government civilians and contractors.

During my career I "survived" several RIFs, it is a stressful situation for anyone who wants to serve their country and in the long run will have detrimental effects on this country's security. If you doubt that, go look at the demobilization numbers following the two world wars and how bad the country had to scramble to rebuild its forces for the next conflict (WWI and Korea respectively).

And then there is the "trickle down" effect that will be felt more severely in military towns such as San Antonio. A large part of our economy stems from the military bases here, and these reductions will mean a decrease in home values, increases in taxes (due to a small tax base), losses in the private sector supported by military customers (many businesses around the three major bases we have here derive a lot of their profits from their uniformed clientele), etc, etc...

Hopefully this is not an indication of things to come. But as for the OP, if he is being separated than there are transition assistance programs he can sign up for. Plus, if he's military he also has Veteran's Administration benefits that he can use. His military experience may give him an edge in the job market, but things are still competitive so hopefully he has prepared himself for this situation and it has not caught him completely off-guard...

Cheers! M2

Go to navytimes.com for more info, but the Navy has decided to force out 3000 E4-E6 personnel between 7 and 14 years. Of course not a single officer will be forced out, just the middle ground.

Not true. The agencies of the federal government give military "extra points" while compiling BQL's (best qualified lists).

Sounds like they are doing what the Air Force did several years ago. In about 5 years, when today's senior enlisted start retiring, they'll realize there's a "shortage" of people for senior enlisted positions, there will be several years of higher promotion rates for the junior enlisted to fill those slots, recruiting will increase to fill the lower tiers of the rank structure which were vacated by the higher promotion rate - things will stabilize for a year or two, then congress and the DON will think they need to cut people to save money, and the cycle will start again.

In the meantime, there will be morale issues as personnel who stay deploy more and look for smarter ways to do things with less people and money.

good. slash more from defense. take away those toys that we dont need. scale down the wars. stop causing wars.

dont wanna get all political (im not a liberal, for clarification) but the military has seen enough money. spend that money elsewhere that will have an almost immediate impact on the american economy

Agreed, audit the Pentagon to see where that money goes.

Agreed on slashing the fighting force, especially the hardware. When you have a single jet costing $200 million (F-35), it's time to move on to other things.
