Spectrum Gym- especially at Rogers Ranch- looking for deals!
Hello all! I am from SA and grew up working out at Racketball and Fitness on 281 (Thousand Oaks) which is now Spectrum. I have always been very pleased. However, I just bought a house in the Inwood/Rogers Ranch area and the Spectrum at RR would be *so* close! And when a gym is close to me, I tend to use it more. However, I have heard that it is *very* expensive (like $70/month) and I just find that hard to swallow. Anyone know any tricks or deals to bring the price down? I know several different people who work out at a variety of Spectrums and it seems everyone pays something different.
Thanks!!!

That's their "high-end" club, and as far as I know they purposely keep the price quite a bit higher than the regular clubs on purpose.
I had heard it was actually in the range of $120 a month for an individual, but perhaps it has dropped recently to compete with Lifetime Fitness close by.

I have just cancelled my membership there due to rates. Single membership was $105. add 1 more for $75. I now go to Anytime Fitness. Not as fancy, but for $20 - $25 per month with multiple locations nationwide it is hard to beat. One is at Huebner and Bitters.

My experience with Spectrum
I joined Spectrum in 2002, Blanco & West location (it was Racquetball & Fitness then). It was within walking distance of my apartment, and I got a membership discount through my employer. In 2005, an apartment fire forced me to move a couple miles away. Several months later, Blanco & West closed.
When Blanco & West closed, Spectrum allowed members to use Rogers Ranch for a year at no extra cost. Normally, Rogers Ranch is somewhere just over $100 a month; too much for me. Since that year ended, I've been going to the 281 location and the Prue Road location. The 281 club is about 4-5 miles away; Prue is about 6 miles away. I'm paying $58 a month. Membership costs and gas prices have increased since I joined.
I'm switching to the new Fitness19 gym by Churchill Estates on Huebner. It is a little over a mile away and only $19.99 a month. I will save $38 a month ($456 a year) plus some gas money and driving time.
I like Spectrum and don't mind driving a few miles to get there. Too bad they don't have more competitive membership rates.

Lifetime Fitness is so much better than Spectrum. Moderator cut: off topic
Spectrum's shampoo and conditioner is worse than lifetime's regular soap. THat's how bad Spectrum is.

Are we really comparing the soap and shampoos of these two chain gyms? That's just silly....
I've been a platinum member with Spectrum for a few years now, but have also worked out at both Lifetime locations in town. Both gyms offer a variety of activity, classes and facilities. Here's quick rundown of my dislikes of both places.
Spectrum RR (and their new platinum-level club @ Concorde):
Large space, but badly laid out. Lots of wasted space.
Lockers are always breaking.
Members are horribly lazy about re-racking weights, wiping down equipment after use and talking on cells while exercising.
Gym doesn't stay open as late as it needs to.
Lifetime Fitness:
Always busy. Packed with people and very, very loud.
Major contingent of young people, making it more of a social hangout than a place to get a workout.
Their level of customer service is equal to Ballys. Not impressive.
Everytime I've been, their locker rooms were filthy.
Both gyms have the newest equipment. Great wet areas (with Lifetime having the better design for pools, etc). Both have full spas. While I'm happy at Spectrum, I'd love to see a truly high-end gym like David Barton come into the city and blow everyone away. I want a better variety of classes and a gym with some eye-appeal to it. Lifetime feels like working out at a Costco and Spectrum is so uneven, seeing as they have so many old clubs that need a major rehab.

I got you all beat... $9.99 membership at Fitness19 on 1604/Braun
They told me they needed to reach 4000 members to break even and they could not get more than 1400 so far, hence the major mark down on price. They still are offering $10 memberships. Good gym if you just want cardio equipment and weights and none of the "filler" stuff like pools, kids area, etc.
P.S> Last year was only paying $45 at Spectrum on New Guilbeau/Tezel Rd.

I get periodic postcards touting the same deal at their location at Huebner and Churchill Estates.

LOL- this is an old post!!! I ended up joining Fitness 19 (on Huebner) and I'm still fairly happy there. I would love to join the RR Spectrum... the pool and childcare facilities would be wonderful. SO, I'm still looking for deals if there are any to be had

This may not still make it a deal, but being an educator or a student will get you $10/mo off the regular rate at any Spectrum location. Discount varies from $49/mo at older locations like Prue Rd, to $59/mo at newer locations like Alamo Heights... so you might get RR for $100-105, or thereabouts.
