Looking for some help... I am currently living in upstate NY with my wife, 3 young boys (2, 9, and 10), and my 2 dogs (whippets). My New Year's resolution is to escape NY. Although we have family here, we hate the long and cold winters, the oppressive taxation, and the rampant liberalism.

We have been exploring a few different areas based on where I believe I can find employment (engineering) and San Antonio is on the list because we have some family there. My wife is very nervous about this, but I am willing to give almost anything a try. If a job in San Antonio would materialize, we would be targeting northwest San Antonio in the Boerne school district (but I suppose we could be swayed about other possible areas too).

So lay it out there... good, bad, and ugly about the northwest section of San Antonio in the Boerne school district.

Thanks.

Boerne school district is great. You picked a great area, no worries.

With the I-10 and 410 interchange complete, Boerne is a wonderful choice.

Need to add a clarification... when I said my wife was nervous, I should have said she needs strong convincing. She has lived in the same area all her life and is not as open to change. This would clearly be a huge change and she does not like the idea of being a stranger in a new town with no close friends to rely on.

We live in the Boerne area but we are not in the Boerne school district, we are the furthest out that Northside ISD goes... We LOVE the area... You cannot go wrong with Boerne...

I thought that "upstate" is the conservative part of New York?

If your wife likes people and can appreciate the differences in cultures, I think she's love it here. We're in New Braunfels, which I personally prefer over Boerne - but that's nothing against Boerne per se. It's just that I saw a larger influx of more liberal thinkers going into the Boerne area when we were deciding on our move 8 years ago - and I tend to be somewhat to the right of that great liberal John Wayne.
You'll be in a beautiful area with (from everything I've heard) great schools - if nothing else, bring her down for a couple of weeks and try some different areas to see what her thoughts on it are. If ya'll do so, feel free to give a holler and we'll help show ya around!

Don't know how far upstate you're talking about, transplanted Brooklyn person here.

~ People are friendly here, you can say hello to another person and not get a nasty stare in return
~ No state income tax, no city income tax
~ Supermarket employees take your groceries out to the car for free
~ When you buy something the cashier actually counts out the change in your hand
~ No alternate side of the street parking
~ Never have to buy chains or snow tires ever again
~ Schools don't date from the 1930's
~ Rarely meet people who have their noses stuck up in the air
~ Excellent BBQ
~ Buying winter clothes doesn't occur
~ You don't hear the sound of police sirens every night
~ Cockroaches compared to NY are a rare thing
~ People don't walk up to your car, spit on the windshield, wipe it with their elbow and ask for money
~ The lanes on the streets/highways are wider
~ You hardly ever drive down a block with cars parked on either side of you

Not sure about Boerne but SA has steep property taxes that will make up for the loss of state and city income tax.

Texas is a nice friendly place with NO state income tax... but moving here from upstate New York is going to be a bit of a shock. The rugged and rocky hill country out Northwest of SA is beautiful in it's own way, but very different! Climate is going to rock your world.

It will certainly take some getting used to, but I absolutely love it here.
